Post Re: Roll to Dodge - Fantasy
Name : Bitter Pill
Gender : N/A
Age : 3.235*10^6 years unformed, 2 years conscious
Race : Wraith
Faction : Observer
Traits : Form Shifting
Appearance : An extremely dense blue-black ellipsoid, core distorted by gravitational lensing effects. Over prolonged manifestation builds up a harsh cloud of metamagical static that might be described as dead pixels.
Background : First Bitter was nothing and thought nothing.

Then the hole brought light to its world. It clawed for the light.

It wanted to know things like movement and heat, but where it went heat went away and the moving things it held went still.

So it probed the alien reality, always seeking, always learning, never assimilating the ways of the living but preserving the rules of their space within itself.

All of those are perfectly valid, so don't worry about if one of those is a valid configuration. It's a useful guide, MLC, so thank you.

Post Re: Roll to Dodge - Fantasy
Name: Amboss Symphonian
Gender: Male
Age: 45
Race: Dwarf
Faction: The Deeplands
Traits: Affinity for Machinery and Golemworks
Appearance: Large, tall, and heavily muscled for a dwarf. Has a large but not unruly beard of brown hair, along with a shock of hair that grows straight up on the top of his head, while the sides are bald. Eyebrows are naturally slanted, so he usually has a serious or eager look, depending on if he's smiling or not. [x]
Background: It didn't take long for his parents to realize that this one was going to be huge. In his childhood, he was bullied and taunted for his abnormal size, frequently called Giant or Human. This stopped soon after realizing that he could easily fight anyone who taunted him. Soon after reaching the traditional age of beginning to work, he found his place in a warehouse, moving crates and putting his large stature to good use. Several years of this hard labor strengthened his muscles and let him get along with and learn from his rough and tumble fellow workers. From this, he had an almost complete reversal of personality, from a quiet, reserved, and taunted outcast that his childhood had shaped, into a loud and proud outspoken man.
In his spare time at the job, of which he had a fair amount of, Amboss would study machinery and golemcrafting. Despite his giant body, he found he was rather deft with his fingers, and developed a certain skill with machinery and a love of making things that move on their own. Many tools designed for smaller hands were broken in this pursuit. Contrary to his large stature and imposing presence, Amboss's place is at the back lines, creating soldiers to fight for him.

Post Re: Roll to Dodge - Fantasy
Name: Amelia Oaks
Gender: Female
Age: 26
Race: Human
Faction: The Kingdom of Terris
Traits: Robust, Holy Reading
Appearance: Short blonde hair, light brown eyes, and a pale complexion. Her body is muscular yet lean, built for sudden bursts of movement as well as holding formation while enduring enemy charges. While Amelia's upper body isn't as strong as male fighters, her legs are, allowing her to firmly hold stances and execute quick footwork to power weapon strikes.

Background: In her childhood, Amelia and her numerous siblings worked their family's small farm, scraping just enough money to keep every mouth from starving, provide a single set of patched clothing per body, and maintain the cramped, leaky barn where the family and farm animals slept. Eventually growing tired of her lifestyle, Amelia began exploring the world beyond the farm whenever she could, meeting new people and learning about the kingdom the rest of her siblings were ignorant of. It didn't take her long to become captivated by preachers who spoke of a greater being and paladins that enforced the will of said being. Spending more time away from the farm and more time in cathedrals, She would be gone from home for hours to days to weeks, until she stopped coming home at all.

Learning the skills of the paladins that she idolized, Amelia learned to be the front-line fighter in crusades and an escort important religious figures, mastering her shield, heavy armor, and a large variety of single-handed weapons to protect believers and strike down heretics. Years passed, and although the idea of visiting the old farm would sneak up here and there, it wasn't until she became a well-known paladin of the church that Amelia finally pushed herself towards seeing her family, at least one more time. Expecting to see them doing well, or at least not any worse, only an empty field greeted the paladin home, a lot of space that had been through many hands before being deserted, unwanted.

Amelia's faith started to decline as she secretly questioned the teachings of priests and consider the whispers of heretics, wondering what would've happened if she had never joined the church, or why the divines did nothing to aid her family after all of her years of service.

I wonder how perks work, and am too ♥♥♥♥ lazy to read anymore of the thread.

I'm currently thinking of a Resilient/(Fragment?|Petrol?) Deeplander, Conjuration???/Mage Axin, or Runic/Something Merchant

Surprise concept sprites.

Image

I'm gonna scale those things up later on, don't worry. But basically, using the character appearance info, I can make your sprites. Bitter Pill is on the left quite clearly. As it gains power, it gets bigger. And bigger.

Low, Mid and High refer to the gear quality as you progress through the game. Just past Bitter Pill is Amboss Symphonian, who in mid gets chainmail. Next to Amboss is the golem, and it gets better too with each tier. In the low tier, it's lead. Mid tier, steel. In the high tier, it becomes a full blown steel war golem with minigun, drill (with diamond drill bit!) and rocket pod.

And at the far end is Amelia Oaks, who like Amboss gets chainmail in the middle of the game then moves onto full plate in the late. The red and black or silver and gold are just different concepts right now.

Overall, these sprites are just prototypes for a bigger system, so keep your eye on these! I'd have done Maart3n's character, but he hasn't put up his appearance yet.

:(

I put a lot of effort into those character descriptions. The traits are very straight forward, so I can only suggest reading the traits again.

Foe: may as well have a devourer possess your sword or something
Caek - Merry Christmas: Devourers can't possess something. Possession only works on living creatures and form shifting would make them turn into a sword :p
Foe: So I posses the observer/shifter
Foe: and then make them a "Don't Touch"ite wolf

Caek - Merry Christmas: Possessing another wraith is just asking for troubling.
Foe: sounds like a worthwhile endeavour
Caek - Merry Christmas: When the other wraith in the party is a player, expect problems.
Caek - Merry Christmas: Also, bad stuff happens on low roll.
Caek - Merry Christmas: Especially because you are attempting to posess a noncorporeal being.
Foe: it's about the journey, not the destination
Foe: the players are mercurial
Caek - Merry Christmas: Okay now I'm confused.
Foe: the journey includes the bad rolls
Foe: and the destination includes the consequences
Caek - Merry Christmas: ...You don't get what I mean.
Caek - Merry Christmas: I mean that trying to posess another player of the party will almost certainly have a bad reaction.
Foe: even if it's consensual
Foe: god damn
Foe: I just want to believe~!
Caek - Merry Christmas: Therefore, it's not worth attempting because a) even if it succeeds you have just possessed another member of the player party, therefore you are gonna have issues and b) in universe, you've just posessed a noncorporeal being from outside this dimension.
Foe: I can be a deadly payload
Caek - Merry Christmas: If they agree to it, there is still no guarantee it'll succeed.

Foe: they don't expect a supernaturally sneaky wolf to be full of death magic
Caek - Merry Christmas: Remember, the power of your shifted form scales to your own power.
Caek - Merry Christmas: A weak wraith becoming a sword is a dull, small dagger.
Caek - Merry Christmas: A strong wraith becoming a sword is a two hander capable of chopping a tree down with a single swing.
Foe: then a wasp full of death magic is warranted
Foe: but I'm too anxious to be a shifter too

Caek - Merry Christmas: Before making your character I would HIGHLY recommend discussing that tactic with the other players :p

In later news: Death Wasps fully capable of Death Magic from Another Dimension.
Sounds like a ♥♥♥♥ idea, even if Kebbit wants to be an advanced espionage agent.

I'm contemplating the following:
  • Resilient Dwarf | Petrolwerks Deeplander
    It mostly involves Shock Infantry/Cavalry.
  • Mechanical Affinity Dwarf | Expert Systems Deep Lander
As you can guess, the War Builder
  • Runic Human | *Some Kind of* Merchant
Generally to make life better, and provide rune magic.
  • *Some Kind of* Elf | Mage Axin
Because assassin bugs are pretty nifty. Can be a nuker with True Magic; can be a BROD Dark Paladin with Blade Dancing.

You forgot a very important part.

Trying to possess a noncorporeal being from outside the material universe is a bad idea.

It's probably somewhere high on the scale of fantasy universe sins, right next to placing a Bag of Holding inside another Bag of Holding.

Even with an alteration of the rules where the plan could work I wouldn't want to sacrifice player autonomy - presumably the possessed party has much less of a say in things, and two-player control of a character would be an absolute nightmare. I hope you didn't plan too much based on the assumption I would go along with the deal.

The general stipulation is that the stronger the principle a possessor is opposing, the more resistance there is; there is only so much you can do with a plane before the copilot slaps you across the face.
Addendum: Even if it is a bad idea, players can still disregard such warnings and possibly experiment with, and break presupposed game states. It is as marvelous as nuclear fission, and its usage as a weapon, and a power source. (And I suppose what the thought experiment establishes depending on the answer, too)

Anyways, twice the ephemeral mass should constitute something; I'm not a total ♥♥♥♥ about control, and I like your amount of trust in having good times.
In Destiny, because at least one person decided to be a federate power, it would be very misguided to think co-piloting one contingent body is outright intractable or taboo, because that's going to be an eventuality, as much as when a Possessor is capable of taking over (or at the very least entering) significant details of Fantasy.
Addendum: This would also be interesting, because it would establish the ability for other being to have such profound effects on significant details and player characters... and I guess, quite literally: what would be established is possessors could meld with other wraiths. Bad idea or not, it would add to the foreignness, and sort of wonder of inter-dimensional beings.

Geez, may as well convince Amelia Oaks I'm a minor/local spirit that has decided to cohort with her, and give her all the life/death magic.

I do like that that has become the major tipping point for you two.
You can see in my post that I'm considering at least one of every race except the Wraiths.
If this is going to be the trend through and through, I'm probably going to drop rune magic, and having a human character.

I'm surprised nobody's making a dynamic runic weapon-making duo that can also back up HKU's golem

Post Re: Roll to Dodge - Fantasy
I don't think my meatheaded single-goal playstyle is fully compatible with your legendary esotericism, Foa.

Assuming the possessed condition doesn't catastrophically explode in our faces (an assumption which is in direct contradiction to word of Caek) and is only temporary or drawn upon in times of great duress, however, I guess I could go along with it.

But I don't fancy wading into a logistical ♥♥♥♥ that splits control over the entire course of RTD Fantasy.

The key point of Federations is that Federations contain smaller subsidiary states with much less relative power, but freedom to operate within their respective spheres. They are discrete, independent, and by no means in charge of the whole system. In a few ways this resembles what a "possessed wraith" build would behave like, but when taken as a whole it is a disingenuous approximation.

In summary, I will say that yes, we could do this in specific cases if absolutely necessary. I don't care if it would screw us over in terms of gameplay (all it adds is additional FUN), but I don't want conflicts of interest to rule the course of the game.

That uncertainty on my end probably means that you would be better off dealing with runes, unless you opt for Possessor Wraith just for its intrinsic appeal.

This. The components of a federation has very little power in comparison to the original player. There is a sort of hierarchy.

Image

The best example for it's function is the US. A strong centralized government with states inside that manage their own internal affairs but can be completely overridden by the primary government.

As for a player possessing another player - Putting my foot down now. No. It won't happen, and if you try it I will not be pleased. I don't care what you think about that - There are sufficient options available so that you can make a different character, so feel free to make something else. But I won't allow players possessing other players. The same goes for exploiting other game mechanics - I'll reserve the right of judgement on offenders on a case by case basis in that regard.

I'm tolerant of all sorts of things in RtDs - Players killing one another I don't mind. Players killing NPCs critical to the plot I also don't mind. The player party splitting up and going in two different directions that would ultimately bring them to conflict with one another thanks to story progression I don't mind.

But possessing another player? Not happening.
