EDIT: New build should be out very soon Dwarf Fortress is a rouge-like programmed by a single person and helped designed by his brother. I am sure most of you here have heard of it from one place or another. It is well known for its gruesome combat mechanics and barbaric dwarven personalities. Typical play can consist of innocent carpenters being mauled by wildlife or your fortress crumbling to dust by its own inhabitants. It has a steep learning curve but is incredibly in-depth and enjoyable once learned. Dwarf Fortress has gone through multiple versions since release. Oh and it randomly generates an entire world (down to every death) when you start. In a nutshell: Quote: Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. The game uses ASCII graphics on default but there are numerous different tilesets and graphical sets. Almost all can be found on the dwarf fortress wiki here: http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page Some copypasta of notable features: Quote: * The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning over 1000 years of detailed history, dozens of towns, hundreds of caves and regions with various wildlife. * The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes. * Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain. * Craft treasures and furniture from many materials and improve these objects with precious metals, jewels and more. * Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness and the depths. * Support the nobility as they make demands of your populace. * Keep your dwarves happy and read their thoughts as they work and relax. * Z coordinate allows you to dig out fortresses with multiple levels. Build towers or conquer the depths. * Build floodgates to divert water for farming or to drown your adversaries. * Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance. * Meet adversaries from previous games. * Recruit people in towns to come with you on your journey. * Explore without cumbersome plot restrictions. * Seamlessly wander the world -- up to 197376 x 197376 squares total -- or travel more rapidly on the region map. * Accept quests from the town and civilization leaders. * Retire and meet your old characters. Bring them along on an adventure with a new character or reactivate them and play directly. * Z coordinate allows you to move seamlessly between dungeon levels and scale structures fighting adversaries above and below. * The combat model uses skills, body parts, wrestling, charging and dodging between squares, bleeding, pain, nausea, and much more. * A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity and air masses to create fronts, clouds, rain storms and blizzards. * Over two hundred rock and mineral types are incorporated into the world, placed in their proper geological environments. * Add new creatures, weapons, plants, metals and other objects via modifiable text files. * Extended ASCII character set rendered in 16 colors (including black) as well as 8 background colors (including black). Here's a link to one of the greatest community fortresses ever. It includes everything we love about dwarf fortress in one epic tale. Definitely interesting, I always loved rogue-likes; they allow far more depth than the modern game. I'll have to invest some time to figure this one out. Thanks! |

I love DF. I tried to start a few fortresses but they all failed to due to boredom or overpopulation. Its been quite a while since I've had a proper, working fortress. Scope, you might wanna add that Dwarf Fortress is not a roguelike, you control an entire fortress of dwarfs in sort of rts (Think The Settlers 2) style. The new version is going to be great. |

I was under the impression that fortress mode was a secondary feature that got expanded because it was more fun than adventure mode |

Anyways, I have a few pictures for you boys. If you know your ascii, you'll see how these consecutive floors connect. EDIT: This is on Relentless Mod... And the users here have been playing DF way before you came here, anyways, ~35th fort, this'll be about testing some systems... |

I know most users here have played DF and that I am in no way the first to play here on DRLFF. I looked around for a thread and saw there was none so I decided to make one. |

You could of necroed the other Df threads, and then ask for a mod or admin to move the thread here. Anyways I'm planning on making siege engine array, but for now, mine those three exposed copper viens and make a bulkhead. |

Yeah it's really not a good idea to listen to Foa about anything because I actually have no clue what he is saying a good 80% of the time. I am in no way exaggerating or trying to be funny when I say he sounds like he is very drunk almost all of the time. |

At first I was like "What the hell?" Then I was like "Omg this is awesome!" But then I was like "Now what?" It's kinda cool but ultimately really boring unless you want to spend hours making an ascii statue out of glass or something. |

very good game, new release should be out very soon. when you start playing it for a while it becomes really addictive, but after a while there isn't much incentive to play. I really wish he would do some UI work though, not that I can't play the game I've done most of the things you can do, it would just make everything simpler and quicker and less repetitive. I made a colour scheme and tileset(still working on) and have a graphics set in progress: Code: [BLACK_R:0] [BLACK_G:0] [BLACK_B:0] [BLUE_R:30] [BLUE_G:85] [BLUE_B:165] [GREEN_R:70] [GREEN_G:125] [GREEN_B:55] [CYAN_R:45] [CYAN_G:145] [CYAN_B:135] [RED_R:170] [RED_G:20] [RED_B:0] [MAGENTA_R:130] [MAGENTA_G:40] [MAGENTA_B:115] [BROWN_R:120] [BROWN_G:80] [BROWN_B:50] [LGRAY_R:160] [LGRAY_G:160] [LGRAY_B:160] [DGRAY_R:100] [DGRAY_G:100] [DGRAY_B:100] [LBLUE_R:90] [LBLUE_G:130] [LBLUE_B:210] [LGREEN_R:110] [LGREEN_G:180] [LGREEN_B:55] [LCYAN_R:70] [LCYAN_G:215] [LCYAN_B:195] [LRED_R:215] [LRED_G:60] [LRED_B:0] [LMAGENTA_R:210] [LMAGENTA_G:85] [LMAGENTA_B:190] [YELLOW_R:235] [YELLOW_G:180] [YELLOW_B:0] [WHITE_R:250] [WHITE_G:250] [WHITE_B:250] |

Robo, he'll get to the ♥♥♥♥ ui after the update, but hey, at least the dwarves will be more compliant, and a lot smarter. |

I started watching Captnduck's tutorial series for it and playing along with him. So far it's been great. I've got a fresh fortress built into a hill of red sand. |

Plenty of trees. Haven't found any fuel yet, though. |
