Well I managed to get my slade dining hall made, even got most of the chairs and tables in there, but then my bad luck compounded several times and I had to abandon the fortress.
The initial problem was that the rest of the adamantine was encased in lava, apart from that which I had already mined, so I started digging some tubes for water to bathe the area and cool things down a bit. On my way up from the adamantine tube to the water, I struck a lake I didn't know was present, and all the water came crashing down upon my miners (who escaped without harm). This flooded my whole tunnel to hell and in fact started watering it, so that happy trees and cave bushes could grow there on the muddy slade. Hoping the water would subside eventually (not knowing at the time it was a lake connected to the outside world and thus infinite), I sealed off the tunnel with some doors and went about other things, like training up my elite hammerdwarves with their copper warhammers.
About an hour later realtime, I got a notice that dwarves were canceling tasks because of zircon demons or something, and when I took a look down where it pointed, it turned out that as soon as the demons destroyed the doors standing between the artificial hell lake and my magma metalworking industries, all my dwarves had swarmed down to retrieve some shiny trinket, ran straight into the demons, and panicked, splitting every which way. Some of them ended up boiling alive in the super hot water/steam combo that the demons cooked up as well as drowning or being beaten to death by the demons before my military could get there.
Suffice to say, everything was lost and I abandoned the fortress to play with in adventure mode, where this screenshot came from.

Strangely enough, chocolate is a lot harder to beat to death than you would expect. I encountered that demon, beat on it for a few seconds, then broke away because I got tired (it was stunned so it was all good), then encountered two more demons, a lizard demon and a spitting lizard demon, killed both of them, then came back and beat upon that chocolate demon for another few seconds before it finally died.

Well, chocolate is awesome.

Hey, did you check if it was SWISS chocolate demon?
That would explain the thoughness.

Chocolate refers to the demon's colour.

I think it's funnier if I think of it as being made of chocolate...
Anyway, I managed to make it about halfway down the stairs to the old hellbore until demons stopped me and I turned back. Miraculously, on exiting the fortress, all the adamantine that I had mined and smelted in fortress mode was sitting outside, perfectly safe and with no demons or anything nearby. In addition, a lot of the equipment I made was strewn about as well, though most of it wasn't of much use to me being copper (I have iron armor at the moment). I plundered some bone trinkets, though, to hopefully sell to pay for a silver warhammer, if the adamantine can't be traded.

I've been playing dwarf fortress, and just recently got the hang of it(stupid ASCII). I have made several fortresses, one of which went out in an epic tantrum spiral. Currently I am at a human village with no stone and plenty of trees. I have a carpenters workshop, food storage(soon to be refuse pile), and a tunnel which has nothing in it. I have started the Dorf Hotel and have a few beds made. This all above ground and with my first 7 dorfs by the way. Also, will the humans attack me?

EDIT: Abandoned Fort. Made a new one. First I mined out a long hallway which seperated at the end.
I mined a room in between the seperation to put a ballista. I proceeded tomine out stockpiles, rooms, etc. Then I attempted irrigation. I channeled a ditch to an area where I channeled down several z - levels. Note: This took a long time as I had major digging projects at the time. Digging before channels. My dorfs would run down the waterfall and kill themselves. I abandond.

So. Wasteland fortress with a nice mountain right at the side of it. I channeled down from the top of the mountain a few levels (a 3x3 fast move box of it that is) then went in and down to find farmable land. So far I've beaten off tens of troglodytes, a few blind cave trolls, and one particularly pesky giant cave spider. Luckily, a magma pipe extended right up to the first level of caverns, so I set up smelting right away and have lots of copper and iron, with a bit of platinum. Moving further down, I found the magma sea by accident, and several spots of adamantine, one of which was right under me. I'm in the process of draining one of the underground lakes (on the second floor of caverns) into the magma around one of the adamantine veins to mine it more easily. Screens when I get back from work.

Sounds decent. I wish there were more wandering semimegabeasts on the wasteland/steppes/mountains. It'd be awesome to have a pack of golems or treants or wyverns arrive rather than boring old wolves and bears and stuff. The giant scorpions in the desert are fun though.

My store of riches (mostly coffins and bars, I accidentally forgot to turn off coffin making when I had two of my dwarves die).
And the top floor, which is both housing and entryway. Top of the mountain is three or four levels up.

Yeah, well, my fortress never got so far. Like, new hdd: re-install windows. Lack of space: delete all DF saves.

They're huge.

Protip: Make smaller worlds, play smaller embark sizes. I'm constantly running on limited machines, either in raw CPU power or RAM, and large maps are the easiest way to cut down the expense, and save on disk space at the same time.
