Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
I've run 200 dwarf forts before, but I prefer the feel of the early game to the point where you can just pelt the enemy with an infinite supply of bolts from behind fortifications while a ballista gibs any that come towards your gate as you pour lava onto those that are too scared to do so. Like, the first time it happens "lolpwned" is fun, but it takes the interest out of sieges for me. I prefer capping the population at 20 and building a tower fort and pitfall traps and what have you while the zombies try and eat my guys. It's more fun that way, I suppose.

You don't really need anything else for the beginning, since you'll have plenty of food and drink available and 4 though bastards to fend anything off.
I'm kind of disappointed with my site, I've finally reached magma at -70 or 80, don't really recall, and no caves at all. That's almost exactly what I take. 'cept I take five picks and two axes and no anvil. I then draft my miners and mechanic (instead of farmer), beurocrat, and guard dorf into my makeshift mining force.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone know what you can use driftwood for? I've got a nice looking beach, and I'm thinking of making a tower-fort.
Man, those elves aren't gonna like me. I'm using wood only.
I wish this game had some sort of kill announcement. I never knew that the map actually showed allies and enemies...

Do the tower shindig, it's the best way to do beaches imo. Yeah the elves get kind of annoyed but if you keep your embark to 2x2 you can barely cut down enough to make the bloody 100 fells a year. Good luck, evil beaches are the best. You might want to cut some trenches, too.

Yeah. I found that fun because enemies actually came. I've never made a fort to the point of a seige, so this was my first taste. (I have made epic seige traps, but I keep running out of food ) Probably going to be doing another one today. Does driftwood have a use?

My newest fort is named "Zushtashkulet ônor", translated "The Ancient Abbey of Despair". Any guesses on what I plan to do with it? Hint: This is DF2010 we're talking about, the one with enhanced HFS.

You know Areku I hadn't even thought of that but that's genius. Too bad we can't mine slade atm, I would love to have masterwork slade furniture for that dining hall. Speaking of, anyone know if you can engrave slade?
