Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Yep. Or you could do it the quick way and drain it again someplace else, because water only evaporates when a tile is 1 water deep. Check with Look.

Yeah, easiest way is to find a lake and make a large hole for it to drain into with d->h.

well, that went....well. My incredibly slow and inefficient draining method did work...eventually.

Please use the edit button. Also, you might consider planting Plump Helmets. They are a good plant to start with. If you plan on makig clothes, then Pig Tails.

Aye, edit button noted. I have switched back to the earlier version that the CAUNG uses. It runs faster on my rig, and it seems....more friendly. Especially where planting is concerned. Is there any overriding reason not to use the earlier version?

Especially where planting is concerned. Is there any overriding reason not to use the earlier version? Lets assume that the "old" version is .40d, if I remember correctly. The "new" version, a.k.a. DF2010 has, compared to the old version, almost ten times as much Z-levels. So, in old version, you could go 10 stairs deep and you'd meet the bottom. In DF2010, you can go almost 100 levels down until you meet the *SPOILER* magma sea *SPOILER* And also, in DF2010 it's easier to find ores and diamonds. There iz plenty of them compared to 40d, for example. And arena mode too, of course.

Arena mode? Well, I think I will hone my skills on the older version, until I feel comfortable with the new one....if only it ran faster! Ah well. Thanks for the info.

You can do a couple things to try to make framerate more acceptable, outlined in this wiki page.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Uh...sorry for the necro but how the hell do you guys get into this game? I've been trying to understand it, but have found no guides that can teach me how to do things other than dig big-ass complex cave systems...and big-ass complex cave systems are useless because I can't do anything after that...uh, I made some doors for some rooms and some beds, but how do you do actually interesting things? Like, interaction with living things and such?

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
It's simple, you kill the living things. disregarding that petty joke have a tutorial. But my playing style is pretty much described in that first sentence. When I see wildlife I hunt it, when I beasts I kill them, when I see elfs I starve them and so on.

you wall them off somewhere...extra points if you fill the place with water and make yourself a fish tank.
