Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Something ♥♥♥♥ awesome just happened.
There was some three forgotten beasts wandering around the cavern I had built my fortress in, and I blocked off all ways into my fortress, with the exception of the stairs to the surface. Apparently, two of them knew how to fly. One of them could breath fire or death or something like that, and they ended up killing each other.
At the cost of 30 dwarves, but at least there's only one left now.
Oh, and one of the injured dwarves is up against a wall with rotting feet. He's still alive. :I

A Good way to access the lava is to cap the volcano with a Stone floor, then cut holes where your placing your magma workshops.
Ive done that on all my forts which have magma and have had no problems with it.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
I never played the new version to any great length, until now, and I am awestruck at the cavern I uncovered. I haven't explored it all, but it looks like it could extend to the edges of the map, and likely does.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
So this thread inspired me to install and attempt dwarfortting. WOW. The depth is amazing, but the difficulty is . Thank you all. Any tips to a novice (i have read the CAUNG) would be welcome. Great fun!

Build barrels, lots of them. Start in neutral areas to get the hang of it, and focus on making a functional fort, don't worry about mega constructions or giant armies or anything like that. Don't dig too deep unless you're able to handle some mischievous and malevolent monsters from the caves.
And learn how to control water real quick, you'll need it for farming.

Thanks! As you wrote that, i had just flooded my barracks, which had the unintended side effect of evaporating and becoming an excellent spot to farm. I think. We'll see how it turns out.

If you plan on making crafts of any type, remember to make lots and lots of bins. You won't regret that.

Make sure to embark in an area with some kind of stone.
Rivers are VERY helpful.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Urgh. I was playing the CAUNG version, and I just felt confident enough to download the newest version. Was there a change in the planting system? My farms say there aren't any seeds, but I have plump helmet spawn and other such....am I missing something?

You have to have muddied ground if you're going to farm underground.
Above ground farming works though.

Still have to have mud. Always mud in the new version. This is why water control is not only important but a necessity.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Oh, ok. Do I just drain some water into the tiles, and wait for it to evaporate?
