miles, surely there's some water somewhere?
also aboveground farming doesn't need irrigation.

uh... how do I get seeds for above ground farming?

Also I have the solution to the needing to irrigate underground.

1 new item, and a new use for an item. If we suggest it on their forums it might get done either as a mod or in the next patch.

New use: Water bucket. If you have a crop, and a source of water, and a wooden bucket, your dwarf will go 'collect' 1/7 of water in the bucket, and drop it on a square of your crop. allowing you to slowly irrigate before you get screw pumps, it'd be perfect if you had 1 dwarf doing nothing but manage the crops early on.

New item for same use, FLOWER WATER BUCKET THING... you know, one of those buckets with the funny spout with the holes in it... Basically, the same thing as above, but 1/7 of water to irrigate 3 tiles, 1 at a time, before re-filling. but... maybe make it need watered more often... or something...

As long as you can take them at start, and get attached to both hauling and crop labors, this could be awesome...

I'm only mentioning this because underground didn't appear to need irrigating at all when I was playing before.

I only say this stuff hear, because I don't have an account their, because I only play DF in fits and starts.

Just build on the level above and make it a pond for the dwarves to fill. When the tiles are appropriately muddied then set the pond to inactive.

hear should be here their should be there wtf.
random spelling annoyance aside, you get aboveground seeds from picking aboveground plants with d->p (specify area to pick plants in) and then eating or brewing (not cooking) said plants.

use the "gather plants" designation. you need to process the plants, too, btw.

nope. you can either process them at a farming workshop to net seeds, or just leave them near a still or dining hall and wait for them to get nommed.

Yeah, arena mode obviously. Or have you encountered 8 zombie hydras when adventuring?

Oh yeah, miles, you can irrigate underground farms with buckets.
Make sure you have a well, or a pool or river designated as a water source. Oh, and a few buckets lying around. Then designate the stairs down to your farm as a pit/pond with the zone designation tool (i) and edit the pit/pond information so that it's status is "is pond (empty)" or whatever. Then your dwarves should run to filling it up from your well/river/whatever resulting in mud. delete the zone once all the squares you require are muddied.

WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO FIGHT SKELETON DRAGONS.

5 adamantine-encased dorfs with adamantine axes couldn't kill one skeletal dragon.

/facepalm

Only Adamantine War Hammers suck because as of the new version War Hammers' damage is affected by the weapon's weight.

Adamantine is super-light.

Now I want to make War Hammers from lead.

Platinum war hammers are better than lead apparently. Can't make them in fortress mode though. I prefer the idea of silver maces anyway.

Also current fort is going pretty well. 2 deaths, both military related (I don't hunt, just set my military to kill them. A maceman decided it would be a good time to sleep when an alligator was about to bite him. It did, took a hand off and he bled out. Bastard green A's got me down a little. The other death was caused by dodging stupidity near a pond. got the body out eventually though. Otherwise, the fort's going well. I need a bit more wood(->charcoal) or coal so I can get the native gold and platinum nuggets I'm sitting on turned into bars and then goods.
