It's... glorious.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
I have to find a good embark place when I get home. Anybody has a good region/save for a starter? Preferably with the Mayday graphics pack.
And it needs to have trees, preferably some metal ores and magma.

Also ores are just about everywhere now. theres veins of pretty much every metal i could want flooding through the undergrounds of my grasslands map (and its 2x2 asperusual, so they're crammed in pretty dense)

Dig through enough caverns, kill enough ogres, cave beasts and etc, and you can get lots of adamantium.

At least there are groupings in game, but oh well. biggest facepalm moment ever was realising page up and down worked like * and / in menus that use the arrow keys.
Also, first ambush killed off all my military including my mace lord. ♥♥♥♥.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Alright, I've been playing and I have a big castle with a brook and a human settlement not to far away.
Pretty neat, I like the new military system even though I can't get it to work much. I mean I can make squads and attack and stuff, but the equip system doesn't work. I tell all my guys to equip iron helms and shields and spears, but they just sit there with their birch shields and crossbows.
Archery ranges confuse me, too. I mess with the settings and one of two things happen. One is nothing. Two is the entire squad crams into the 3 squares I have designated as a range.
Also, they never seem to stop sparing unless I unbarracks the barracks.
Pretty fun though, lotsa resources everywhere this time around so I can make all the metal equipment I want while still having trees and junk.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
great update.
military system ruined.
farming made more tedious for no reason.
dwarves with a scratch are operated on and subsequently killed by the doctor who left the operation to get a snack.
giant caverns across every z-level everywhere getting in the way of anything with tons of VARIETY like the way every one is made up of near random minerals and they always have a water source at the bottom with dumb generic plants in it.
can't forget the magma seas. which don't make any geological sense. and their un-mineable cores.
loving the way dwarves now decide to starve themselves to death in the name of production.
great update.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
My hunters are broken. They refuse to hunt. End of.
My workers refuse to make charcoal. They don't try and fail, they flat out refuse to acknowledge that there are charcoal-making jobs. Another fail. Thus, I cannot make any more iron items, with my shedloads of iron I found. Three iron chains and a half-dozen training spears aren't going to get me through this game.
I can no longer use underground soil to make crops: I now need to make them muddy. Luckily there was a pond on my B1 borders. Also, making food/alcohol seems to be harder somehow... might just be the strange UI changes freaking me out.
And I'm confused with all the military stuff. I've pretty much just set my squad to train 24/7, and issue anything else with the Kill command. Kill command = Both awesome, and my only sistainable replacement for hunters.

Yeah, the cooking thing is currently pretty broken. According to some forum threads it stops you from cooking stuff entirely made of alchohol, but the way this is done is just having the alchohol spilt on the ground and nothing created on the completion of the cooking job.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Well, because of many reasons i still prefer 40d over the new version. I picked an embark location randomily. Guess what? This place is like heaven. Magma vent, lots of bauxite and obsidian, magnetite, etc. etc. I'm a lucky guy! Edit: Some of you will not maybe believe me. Well here's some images: Second one shows some of my mining operations. And yes. I use cheats because I'm still not so good at this.
