Oh and guys, I'm making a completely smoothed, engraved 3 z-levels high dining hall with balcony pubs on the highest level and a giant meeting hall on the lowest.
Also, waterfall. Atleast I'll try making one, no promises.

Lavafall would be better. Albeit a bit more difficult.

Yeah, but I'm going baby steps. First waterfall I'll ever be making.

Let me guess, did not do it right and ended up having your base flooded?

Two beasts so far. The first one was a snow giant who got punched to death by a child, and a lican who twitched around in the mud and then died all by itself.

Weird game this.

Not exactly, but more or less that. :P

I had a lot of corpses due to some particularly bloody goblin sieges, so I wanted to build a nice tomb for them. Carved out a 3 z-level hall with tombs in the walls from the ground to the ceiling and walkways next to them. I figured a nice, calming waterfall would soothe the mourning with it's mist (they seem to like that) so I got a shaft mined out from a nearby river leading into the tomb. There was a small bassin at the bottom of the opening with drainage leading to a pump stack and from there back to the river.

All seemed to go well and construction was soon done. Now what happened next I can't exactly remember since it was some time ago, but I think I unknowingly missplaced the last floodgate (there were two next to each other in the 2-wide shaft the water entered through) so that water could go in between the gate and a wall piece that stood diagonally next to it.

Since I wasn't aware of the leak I let the workers demolish the dam that prevented the water from coming in during the construction. The river started flowing into the shaft and, to my surprise, in between the gates. After the initial surprise though I wasn't too worried. After all, the pumpstack would quickly pump out the water and I'd just have to find a way to once more dam the river's entry so I could replace that one floodgate. I don't think anyone will be surprised when I say that the pumpstack did not quickly pump out the water.

In fact, it didn't pump at all because I'd built two of it's pumps without an opening below them to access the others. And so started the flooding. I immediately ordered for the relevant pumps to be deconstructed and the floors to be dug out. This all took a while though (lazy dwarves) and the tomb was filling up pretty quickly. Soon the ground level was flooded. And the water kept rising. After a while even the highest walkway was starting to get wet. This was a bit of a problem because those walkways were the only way to access the pump stack that lay beyond. As the flood turned the tomb into a watery grave I had to get a small service tunnel mined out from the corridor leading to the tomb (which was still dry due to a door sealing the entrance) to the pump stack stairwells. This all took some time, but luckily in the end the stack was repaired in time to pump away the excess water.

Funnily enough only one dwarf died in the process. He got taken by the initial flood through the shaft and fell down the waterfall.

If I were to start a succession game, would there be enough players for it here?
Just wondering, since Bay12 is so huge that I'm scared to join one over there.

As long as you don't need me to setup a military then I'd be interested.

Same thing, though I can probably learn the basics.

Does someone else want to make a thread or shall I do it?
I'm bad at opening posts.

Hell, we could use this thread, given the amount of attention it gets.
