You sure? Cause in my game i found a quarry of 20 diamonds. And around 50 chunks of gold, however, i and to kill at least 10 zombies and around 2-3 spiders.
But instead of jumping in i threw tnt in there.

Well, I was planning on the mountain conversion. But a test over a book I half read and two essays got in my way.
Wait until night, and follow the path.
