DF2010 release in "about a week", hopefully not an epic april fools day prank by toady.
Quote:
03/26/2010: Fixed a crash related to vermin getting caught in cobwebs, and another series of crashes related to temperature. The conditions for the different landed nobility to be elevated from your fortress population are in the raws now, as are megabeast and semimegabeast and titan attack conditions. They can be set based on population, exported wealth and created wealth. So, for instance, if you run a low-population fort for whatever reason, you can adjust the numbers. This came up during the course of debugging the landed nobility... and it turned out the liaison was not coming back in subsequent years because the visiting dwarf lost the position upon leaving the map... anyway, that's sorted out.

The current situation is that I expect a (buggy!) Windows release in about a week, with the 40d# merge commencing at that time (or within a few days of the release). This is a bit of a change of plan, since I was originally going to release for all operating systems at once, but I feel like I'm going to get even more bogged down if I don't do it this way and the initial pre-merge release will give us a control to work with in the same way that 40d can be compared to 40d#. The initial merge release shouldn't take too long though, and it will be the top priority aside from the worst catastrophic crashes and things of that nature. I know the merge changes make the game playable for many of you when it otherwise isn't.

It's not a joke. Everyone in Bay12 is excited.

I'm most excited about Arena mode myself.

Pardon me if I say OMGWHATTHESHIT?
If there's actually a release, you might not see me on these forums for a few months.

One leetle problem. All our saves will stop working. Also, I have no idea how to install this graphical tileset onto a fresh copy of DF.

Don't worry. I'm sure someone will upload the new version with your graphic pack.

Curses. There are fortresses I've been working on for weeks that'll go to waste because of this. All the same, I can't avoid awaiting the new stuff eagerly.

*spits* you woman.

I think I might actually start playing this again when the new build comes out. I heard it's going to have more battles, is this true?

*sigh* misogyny.
Still, real dorfers use ascii (like a baows etc), especially when you just want a few more frames per second on your terrible terrible laptop :P

More battles is true. http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=30026.0 everything here is true.
Its going to be beyond awesome. Its going to eat a crapton of time. Save incompatibility is a minor annoyance, I play hard and fast and generally each fort only lasts a few days before I get bored or beseiged by everyone. I live for the early-mid game.

Plain ascii is painful. :eyeloss:
It is also hard to tell what the god is going on with m's, E's, g's, :)'s, and red, blue and green ~'s everywhere. Mostly I just prefer the visuals when they contain more than just 1 color.

I use the default graphical tileset, and because it makes everything square. Dislike ascii rectangular tiles.

So get a square ascii tileset, heck, use the one I posted a while back. 6x6 squares in that one. http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/List_ ... acter_sets has more. I prefer the lo-fi ones, but if you're used to the default ascii (curses) then you can get a 16x16 version of it.

You get used to this very quickly, especially if you visualise with stonesense for a while. It helps get your mind around how DF does 3d, and what each character means, and from there, you're sweet.

Isn't the default graphical tileset just the ascii tileset but in graphical mode (and square)? That's what I always thought.

Hrm. I noticed that right on the first part, Toady mentions to be "Updating HFS wound-related stuff". I oughta assume that's something about tentacle demons, and if so... Eek, I don't want to even think about it.
