Okay we'll start from Zero.

3) Download the "40k Vassal Module" for this ill be using 5.4E the latest version.

5) Extract Vassal 40k folder to wherever (you will need to remember though)
6) if you had not selected "run and close" at the end of the Vassal install. run vassal now.
7)>File>Open Module>C:\\bleh\bleh\Vassal 40k\Vassal 40k.bleh
Boom. Welcome to Vassal 40k.
Now ill run you though a basic game.
Once you have made an account (yes entering your name and password is all you need to do, no capcha or 40 fields to fill out here.)
1)Select "start new game offline"
2)Select map for this ill use "temperate" though maps are randomly generated from terrain pieces.
3)Select role. You'll want player 1.
4)OHGODWHATDOALLTHESEBUTTONSDO.
5) Dont panic, click "Table" to view the map
6) Hit Units to see the unit selection area, this can be resized to see all the tabs.
7) have fun browsing all the tabs of units for a while.
click and drag a unit to the play table or two.
9) the dice buttons do what they say, roll to hit, to wound, to yadda yadda.
10) click more buttons see how it works.
Simple really as the game isnt a true simulator (all calculations and info has to be provided by you, things like codex's and rules.)
Notable things are you can right click units to change their weapons or base colour.
You can right click rulers (found under the unit selection>templates) to rotate or delete them.
Back on the window that popped up around step 4 there is an "army list" where you can drag units to, and save the file to recall it later.
