Contemplating getting a 40k army. I've got the fantasy starter, but nobody around here plays fantasy and painting forty thousand single-mould goblin spearmen is boring. I'm torn between a few armies though.

Either I go Orks just for conversions and making ♥♥♥♥ and having it look like it roughly belongs
Or Space marines and go heavy infantry and dreadnoughts so that I can put everything in drop pods. Just so I can roll to scatter on like six droppods. Not to mention painting them would be cool, especially those pods.
Or I could go IG and make some rebels from converted figures and paint them all like terrorists.

But it seems like everyone plays IG or SM and I don't wanna buy like forty cans of green paint for the orks. But those Trukks looks sexy. Imma have to hot rod one out. Chrome and everything.

I'm not sure that this is the proper thread for that question.

It is, assuming he is talking about Warhammer 40k Retribution.

If he is not then you are correct.

huh seams its not that popular over here, yeah i was on about Retribution which counts as 40k?
Or is this TT only thread? (soz, other forums i browse tend to have alot of DoW games going on)

Mah steam name is; Kippeth. If anyones up for some retri either co-op or TLS, some comp stomps are good too.

Ah well, i used to play spacemarines, got around 2k points. Lots of Tac squads. one command squad, one pred, one razorback.

Also got 500pts of IG (all infantry), 1.5k pts of Nids that are in dire need of repairs and lastly 750pts of orks with only 200 or so points actually built before i had t move house.

Also anyone heard of Vassal40k? we should get together with that sometime.

Essentially its an unofficial virtual tabletop which has a HUGE number of 40k sprites. The 40k module has just about every unit you could want(and just about every wargear option too). You still need a codex and the core rulebook *cough*PDF*cough*.

Basically you download and install "Vassal" a java based virtual tabletop for games like this.
Then download the 40k Module. which contains all the sprites and templates (blast, flame, immobilised ect)

Itd be fun to run some 500pt games with the DRL crew.

awesome.

Id be happy to run a DRLFF tournament, or campaign through vassal (for campaign think DoW2 style with each player using 1-2 squads.

Hmmm lemme reinstall and see how it goes. i havent played the new version.

Okay we'll start from Zero.

1) Download the Vassal Engine.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/vassalengine/files/VASSAL-current/VASSAL-3.1.18/VASSAL-3.1.18-windows.exe/download
2) Install Vassal.
3) Download the "40k Vassal Module" for this ill be using 5.4E the latest version.
http://www.mediafire.com/?5tetpg11qn655bn
4) Eliphas open the portal
5) Extract Vassal 40k folder to wherever (you will need to remember though)

6) if you had not selected "run and close" at the end of the Vassal install. run vassal now.
7)>File>Open Module>C:\\bleh\bleh\Vassal 40k\Vassal 40k.bleh

Boom. Welcome to Vassal 40k.

Now ill run you though a basic game.

Once you have made an account (yes entering your name and password is all you need to do, no capcha or 40 fields to fill out here.)
1)Select "start new game offline"
2)Select map for this ill use "temperate" though maps are randomly generated from terrain pieces.
3)Select role. You'll want player 1.
4)OHGODWHATDOALLTHESEBUTTONSDO.
5) Dont panic, click "Table" to view the map
6) Hit Units to see the unit selection area, this can be resized to see all the tabs.
7) have fun browsing all the tabs of units for a while.
8) click and drag a unit to the play table or two.
9) the dice buttons do what they say, roll to hit, to wound, to yadda yadda.
10) click more buttons see how it works.

Simple really as the game isnt a true simulator (all calculations and info has to be provided by you, things like codex's and rules.)

Notable things are you can right click units to change their weapons or base colour.
You can right click rulers (found under the unit selection>templates) to rotate or delete them.

Back on the window that popped up around step 4 there is an "army list" where you can drag units to, and save the file to recall it later.

i have 3 or 4 people interested in playing some form of game, most likley a campaign.

If youre up for a game drop your name/steamname (cause i get you lot confused) along with which army you would like to play and what times GMT you are available.
