It's just so much effort to slaughter the elves. You can't just mark them as enemies (or can you??) and I'd rather just ignore them than chase them down with complex traps. Though, see a few pages ago where I built my flooding tradechamber? I just wish pressure plates worked with caravans... Plus, I like a fort with clean floors. I hate strewn stone bits everywhere. And those elves loves some stone trinkets! They are the best garbage bin. Mind you, once you slaughter one caravan you don't really need to trade for anything ever again...

Makes it easy to build epic fortresses on tops of mountains with no nearby wood/dirt/water.
Maybe that should be my next challenge; survive without trading (or slaughtering the traders). hmm. Just don't forget to bring an anvil, or you'll be denied pretty much everything dwarvenly the mountain can offer you.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
The ♥♥♥♥ hit the fan. I ran Reveal.exe a time ago, and recently hit the Glowing Pits. All was good, and there was much rejoicing as I found my first (and only) magma. I managed to take down the leader demon with my legendary miner, inflicting (post-humously) fatal wounds to it's internal organs. And then the toads came. I tried station my military next to them, but they weren't moving from the hospital, where two or three of them were recovering. I tried Floor and Hatch over the glowing pits, but my dwarves didn't move. I then built a door to the pits, with the intention of linking it to a lever. It didn't get that far. The toads bashed down the door, although I didn't realise it was them at the time. Next thing I knew, 2 dwarves had been killed by 5 toad demons, inside my mine. Only then do my military decide to move, but only 4 men. Those 4 champions, armed and wearing a mixture of irons, steels and two bits of adamantine (between them) were able to take down ~20 toad demons, with no wounds at all.
Then the goblins sieged. Easily taken down, although they targetted my currently undefended back door. Military were able to take them down, no problem. However, this is where it gets bad. First, my Fish Cleaner went berzerk. Sure, it's not a highly trained job, especially as I have since out-fished the world... until I saw that he'd gained high amounts of all conversation skills, and consequently high amounts of strenth, speed and endurance. He chased my dwarves, who were cleaning up the goblins parts and armours, armound the map, before finally being killed my the military.
All sounds good, until you realise I've lost ~5 dwarves. I'm currently in a tantrum spiral, and people are dying left right and centre. I can only hope my enormous stockpiles of booze and food, as well as each dwarf having his own bedroom, can try bring them back up from this. Otherwise, I've lost my best fortress to date.
Also, I've been playing at 15FPS. It sucks. The human traders are still stuck in my fort, and I experienced another elven caravan go nuts.

No, no. If **** had really hit the fan, it would have been tentacle demons. Toad demons are easy, you can magma-drown them.

And the ♥♥♥♥ wasn't the demons. Or the siege. It's the inevitable downfall of my fortress. I modded in explosive webs, my world is on fire, I've given up and abandoned.

Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Y'know, you can easily survive a tantrum spiral by locking all the dawrves with no friends in their rooms and waiting for everyone else to die. Even if only a single dwarf survives, he can keep the fortress going until the next migrant wave arrives.
Also, does anyone know if the DRL succession game is still running?

It kinda stalled. I think Skiv might've forgotten about it.

Also, I've been playing at 15FPS Just FYI, the game only simulates revealed tiles. Running reveal.exe is the fastest way to kill your performance.

And I didn't have that many tiles revealed, and all animals were locked away, with no catsplosion. 150 dwarves might have been what was clogging me... Although, I'm running at 40FPS with 30 of the guys.

Water, especially waterfalls, can devour FPS.

This time round I'm just dropping caged gobbos into a lava shaft. Or might build a top-of-the-map-to-the-bottom shaft... Screw being inventive, dropping is effective and practical, as I can build off the main tower.

I would too. Dunno how to, but I'd be willing to do it.
