I'll take the lazy way out: Hash the current and last backups and backup if need be. I'm not entirely sure how much work eliminating old backups would entail, and I don't feel like doing so. Besides, currently both backup repositories I keep take up only 100meg of a 120gig drive, I'm not worried about them. Well, I was thinking overhead in the form of "omg I have over 9000 backups to check for integrity." Cron a CRC is probably the best idea.

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server
True, but red would still win. Besides, it the first side THOR built.
EDIT: since this doesn't deserve new post, Duh, i dont think i knows how to fix that.

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server
Hm, I have just discovered that even if nothing goes on in the server, md5 hash changes. Perhaps because the server saves the file and the timestamp changes? Advise: How do I fix this? Would a file size check be enough?

Would a file size check be enough? Yeah the server auto-saves the file every so often (5-15 minutes or so). Filesize might work but why don't you just do a backup every hour for.. 72 hours, and delete anything older than 72?

Filesize might work but why don't you just do a backup every hour for.. 72 hours, and delete anything older than 72? Every minute actually. I suppose I could cap the backups, but I really do want this backup scheme, it would cut down a lot on useless backups made during the middle of they day when no one is on. I'll try out filesize and see what it produces. If it works, then I'll go with that until a better option comes my way.

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server
Most effective, however least conveinient, would be doing it manually.
Unless, it's the timing of the backups.

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server
Well that failed miserably. Filesize apparently changes as well. I'll just go with players online then.

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server
If you use a hash function on the map files you can check them for differences. if has1 != hash2, backup. else skip until next cycle.

Re: Duh102's Minecraft server
wow, every minute? That's probably the source of the every-minute lag-spike I get. Any chance of drawing that out a bit?
If the filesizes are reasonably small, the 72-hour thing will work magically delicious

In lieu of Duh's backup system, I think memorable backup numbers should be commemorated. For example, Backup 1776. The Daratealmian Revolution.
