Post Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
Let me guess:

Cadian command squad
+
assorted pieces of plastic

(Plasma pistol seems to be a marine model judging by the size, although I could be wrong. From the back angle it looks okay but from the front it looks too big to be a IG version.)

@areku, isn't that shoota a: Ork slugga arm, shoota gun and a marine scope?

Btw, to those of you who have a spare big shoota and who want a very interesting shoota boy squad:
Kut the barrel of a shoota and the spare big shoota and swap them. Now built a small ammo box out of plasticard and use the chain ammo bit that is in every ork kit to fit it to the gun. A normal shoota boy arm should be capable of holding the box.
You now have one long barrelled shoota and a snubnose machine gun.

Here have an age old picture:(and I mean old, 2009 old.)
Image
In this picture you will find:
The nearly stock big shoota boy.(now try finding the converted part.)
The chopped big shoota boy.(including AMO box.)
A boy wielding a side fed shoota.(and a custom shoulderpad.)
A boy looking rather surprised that there is still ammo in the clip.(not proppa shooting if ya ask me.)
2 insignificant gits in the background.
Tons of invisible freehand, thanks to terrible photo's and horrible use of washes.(like a pattern on the grot's scarf.)

And once again this was a very long post.
PS, you will need some serious eye skills to find the coverted part.
EDIT: changed the picture

Maarten is right, most of the astronaut was taken from the Cadian Command, which is by the way an amazing set to work with. Even the gun, and it also surprised me that it's the same size as the Space Marine one.
There were some other parts, though. The end of the coat was sanded to make it look like a jumpsuit, the air tank is a marine meltabomb without the handle, the tubing is some solid telephone wire, the neck guard is a bit of bent plastic, and the head is (a bit surprisingly) the ball joint from a killa kan's arm.

You missed almost completely on the Boss's gun, though. It's a nob TL arm (boy arms are way too thin for the nob torso), shoota shotgun (originally left handed, took some time to convert) and big shoota scope (suitably bulky).

Also, great conversion for the boyz, I'll try it out on mine.

Oh, and I've just started a heavily converted chaptain in termie armour. I have to say, terminators are a joy to paint.

Post Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
The Contemptor is pretty sweet, yes. But I'd rather get a Venerable model (if they ever come out).

I might have reignited my passion for the models, and I'm looking for an army to start. I have some old Necron warriors and Iron Warriors models but they were painted when I was like 11 and they look like ♥♥♥♥. My main problem is that I don't really know what army to choose.
Spess Muhreens are nice and well-rounded, and quite obviously don't suck due to GW loving them to bits. The more specialized codexes are especially overpowered. Then again I love the Guard, but I don't want to roll vehicle-heavy armies because one tank costs more than the GDP of an average sized south American country. Then again going infantry-heavy is very slow and tedious and I'd have to paint about ten thousand models and the more special regiments (Cadians are boring) either cost a shitload or aren't sold anywhere.
Orks are also nice and I really love making looted models, but I'm not sure if I have the ability to paint them well enough. Plus a boyz-heavy army gets demolished by pie-plate IG and the vehicles, once again, cost more than a return trip from Mars.
Necrons are just dull at the moment, and while a new codex might be out soon enough it's still kinda eh. I'd only roll Necrons for Apocalypse.

The venerable is pretty damn good as well, but I just prefer the contemptor for the mechanical visuals, it really looks like it can support it's own weight, which would be though on the regular dread stubby legs.

I've heard rumors that the new necron codex will come within a couple of months and quite possibly introduce a few new models, given their extremely limited range.

I know it's gibberish, but just scroll down to the pictures. The skin is so damn good.

Well, I suppose I've officially decided on using spess muhreens. Making an original chapter do not steal.

I actually find Orks considerably easier to paint than SPESS MEHREENS. You don't have to worry all that much about being neat, and can go all crazy and **** with weathering and color schemes. Oh, and don't forget about Kans. It's like three dreads for the price of one!

That said, the emperor-botherers can also look very good, and I find termies an absolute blast to paint. Oh, and the new GK models are also pretty awesome, if you want something a bit different from the usual.

Also FoiL, that's one amazing DP. Bonus for being written in good ole' classic portuguese. It's always so fun to read!

So, I heard you like dreadnoughts.

Nothing too fancy here, just a standard dread with way too much badab black. That and I just realized that the base is unfinished.

Depends on what you're trying to archieve.

I mean in some cases ogryn flesh is the way to go.(like ork gunbarrels, no really)
No wash is better than any other.

Metal washed flesh? How does that even work?

It looks like oil/dirt/rust/stuff. ehm.... let's just say it looks dirty.

The big shoota in the picture on the top of this page is a good example.

Guys, you really painted all of this?

Damn you have patience and art skills.

Patience yes, art skills not really. Now-a-days most of the detail is already on the model, you just have to highlight the fine things and make a proper job on the rest.

Also, about the washes. Like maart3n said it depends on what effect you're trying to achieve. Each wash is based on a color, for example, badab black is obviously black, ogryn flesh is a bit redish, devlan mud is based on green and so on.

I kind of abuse the black on my muhreeens because I like a bit of an "oily" look, kind of in the same way you can abuse the ogryn flesh to add a bit of rust, or the devlan mud to simply dirty things up. I also tend to use the ogryn flesh on my bases to get an earthy color.

Hmm, rust. I'd not thought of that. Good idea, actually, I'll try it on my next ork.

@Asklar: I agree with FoiL. I'm the least artsy person ever, and yet I find painting miniatures rather easy, even relaxing.

@FoiL: Hmm. I see what you're trying to achieve, but I think sometimes badab black does not look so well over large blue areas, as it becomes a bit grey-ish, looking more like dust than oil. It's your call though.

Also, finally finished my termie captain. Sometimes I laugh at the fact that no less than five different kits went into this single miniature.

Hmm. I really need to find a brighter place to take pictures at.
