Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
From what I recall from the store they're around 35 dollars or so. And I usually spend a good two hours on a single miniature, maybe more when it comes to regular or terminator sergeants, so I feel your pain man.
This makes me want to buy several kilograms of used necrons. Damn it areku.

Well now I feel even worse. Oh, and you're talking about dollars. I'd thought they were euros.

You guys are right, washes are mankind's greatest invention.

The three amigos are now in ready to go. And yes, the XVI came out hella crocked in the termie, oh well.
I swear that's the first time I've seen denim on an ork. If that's denim.

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
I'm finally starting to seriously considering this. The thing is I won't have a lot of people to game with, do you guys think I should get assault on blackreach so I can game with my little brother?

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
Hmm. Well, technically AoBR is the most cost-effective set, letting you deploy two armies for the price of a single battleforce, and FoiL has said a lot of good stuff about it.
On the other hand, it is still a hefty investment, and the models have considerably less assembly options than the standard ones.
You know what I'd suggest? Get yourself a Tactical marine set, five or six different colours, two good brushes and, if you can afford it, the Painting Citadel Miniatures book. Or just download it, whatever suits you. Anyways, that'd give you a nice set, with models that'd show you what this whole hobby is about, the scale and it's peculiarities, the amount of time you'll be spending on each piece, that kind of thing. In fact, I'd postpone buying a larger pack until you've completed your 10 initial marines and a bigger model (dread, rhino, whatever you choose), since having a ton of unpainted stuff cluttering your table can be quite demotivational. Once you've familiarised yourself with the kind of work the game entails, then move on to the army of your preference. Most battleforces have a nice starter selection, so you can pick up just about any of them to get the base to your force, specially if complemented with an extra unit or two from separate packs. Also, since you think there won't be many others already in the hobby for you to play with, try and make two smaller armies instead of a single huge one. Not only does that give you the option of inviting someone over to play, but also means you'll get to know a more varied selection of modelling opportunities.
Oh, and finally, don't be discouraged if your first model looks like ****. It's a step in the learning process, it'll actually become pretty easy to paint after a couple of tries.
Best of luck!
EDIT: Also washes. Get washes. Washeswasheswashes. Git 'em washes. Devlan Mud and Badab Black are usually enough to cover your washing needs.

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
Thanks for the pointers, admittedly all I want to do right now is construct and paint some miniatures actually playing the game is secondary right now. I think I want to start an Ork army...
Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
Areku NAILS it. The best idea is just to do it, spend a few bucks on something that you might end up loving. It's a great hobby with many different aspects(modeling, painting, playing, etc) and I'm sure you'll find the part that you like the most.
I'll be the guy raining on everybody's parade then, AOBR is great for the first few games. BUT: Once you get the hang of it you'll notice the massive lack of balance(the ork army has roughly 100 points less than the marine army, 5** vs 460?) which can really ruin games when you try to seriously play. The marine army is also not a "legal" army, as in it doesn't comply with the rulebook which states that there have to be 2 troop units and 1 HQ unit, with optional maximum of 2 HQ, 6 troops, 3 Elites, 3 Heavy support and 3 light attack troops. The marine army has 1 troop, 1 HQ and 2 Elites. This also makes it fairly strange to play.
The other thing you'll notice fairly soon is the ♥♥♥♥ quality of the dreadnought. It feels cheap and fake next to a real dread. The weapons don't make that much sense either, but that's just my opinion.
On the other hand: The kopta's are ♥♥♥♥ brilliant, great models with good detail. Same goes for the marine captain.
The marines and orks are okay, a bit static because they are 3 piece models but otherwise okay. You'll probably want a bit more options if you like your models to look interesting. But they aren't bad.
The battleforces are a great way to start a serious army but can be a bit pricey.(not that bad once you get used to GW prices but pricey non the less) If non of the above options sound like a good idea to you, you could always just build your army from the ground up. Get a small box set and some paint and get going. If you like the style of what you just painted, stick with it, if not, get yourself another.
I currently have 3 armies, and I must say that I have enjoyed the third the most. It started out with the AOBR box set, I build the marine and ork army, painted them up and played some friendly games against friends and fellow gamers. Then I purchased another dread because I liked the marines.(didn't build it....) I then played a game with the orks and LOVED them, imagine a bunch of angry axe wielding rednecks shooting into the air and you're pretty close to how they play. I really fleshed that army out to a serious force. Had tons of fun building and converting the box sets. The detail is so much higher, much more fun when painting IMHO. Then I got my hands on some guardsmen, I decided not to go with the usual boring cadian green and tan and instead chose to turn them into my own band of ragtag chaos worshippers. Giving me the option of converting them and doing all kinds of crazy things without people complaining about my army not fitting into 40k lore. I love them.
Damn that's a long post.
EDIT: It is a great way to start the hobby. You should notice though that the beginner set I got(the hobby version, with clippers and glue but no mini's.) Had some of the older colours in it, meaning that the black was glossy. I can't find it right now but I think that that set also has the glossy black in it.)

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
Oh one more thing. I live a fairly rural life and the only wargaming shop I'm aware of is a 2-hour drive from my small town so almost everything I buy will be online, should that factor into my decision on starting this hobby?

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
Mister. There are no GW stores in my fudge country. I have to go on smuggling trips and sleep on the Grills Locker every time I want to buy a decent wash, since postage to where I live is about $30 per purchase.
So no, driving for 2 hours or ordering stuff online should not be a big deal. Also, if you want extra bitz, make sure to order from Bits&Kits, since their postage is two bucks for literally anywhere in the world.
Also, I find the hobby starter kits a bit overpriced. $2 nail clippers usually do as good as, if not better than, GW sanctioned ones.

You guys have been a great help in pushing me toward to the hobby, there is only one thing left and that has nothing to do with the hobby itself, I'm waiting in a job.

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
And maart3n said pretty much all I had to say. AOBR is pretty damned good for a newcomer, but the lack of quality shows rather quickly. All the terminators and marines look exactly the same and when painting 30+ models you get tired of it rather quickly. Towards the end I really had to try and push trough the last marines, since I felt like was painting the same guy over and over again.
That little squad pack you pointed out really is brilliant, since you get 5 marines and enough colors to paint each one of them in different chapter colors, so I'd recommend buying that IF YOU LIKE SPACE MARINES and a badab black wash. Because washes are LIQUID TALEEENT.
It also helps to expand slowly but methodically. Going out and buying 300 bucks worth of stuff really isn't the way to get started. I recommend imposing a monetary limit on yourself for each month, something like 30 bucks.

Space hulk chiaroscuro style. Stuff like this really makes want to spend 100 bucks on an airbrush.

Re: Thinkin' about buying some Warhammer 40k models
You know, sometimes you finish a model and become completely satisfied with it. Then you look at some master-level minis on the GW site... and don't envy their painters at all. Hell yeah.
Took me veritable ages to finish, but it was worth every second. My favourite parts are the gun (since I spent over half of the total project time converting and painting it), the pants (finally got the hand of denim - looks better in person) and the Klaw (only part that took less than half an hour to finish).
Boy oh boy, am I happy with this little guy. Now all that's left is finding some good sand for basing and giving him a bosspole and squig.
Also Foil, goddamn that's one sexy paintjob. Video embed isn't working though.
