Readability
i'll suck ♥♥♥♥ for a mod/edit of the executable that makes everything 10px arial
or at least the console
seriously CC's font is terrible on anything over 1024x768

Re: Readability
Can't be done due to how the engine (doesn't) handle kerning. Edit:Daman wrote: i'll suck ♥♥♥♥ for a mod/edit of the executable that makes everything 10px arial hurp derp Still, that is illegal as outlined in the license agreement. CC License Agreement wrote: 1. GRANT OF LICENSE: Subject to the terms below, Data Realms LLC hereby grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and to use the shareware version of Cortex Command ('Software'). Under this license, you may: (i) install and use the Software on as many computers as you wish for your personal, internal use (ii) copy the Software for back-up or archival purposes. Whether you are licensing the Software as an individual or on behalf of an entity, you may not: (i) reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software or attempt to discover the source code; (ii) modify, or create derivative works based upon, the Software in whole or in part without the express written consent of Data Realms LLC; (iii) remove any proprietary notices or labels on the Software; (iv) resell, lease, rent, transfer, sublicense, or otherwise transfer rights to the Software.

Re: Readability
Oi, I was under the impression that the game reads all the font information out of bitmaps stored in base.rte. ... Do we break the license when we double-click the folder and open it?

Re: Readability
You can modify the font, but as the engine doesn't support dynamic tracking, the letters will meld together. That is, the letters will get bigger, but won't be moved any further apart. In my last post, when I said kerning, I meant tracking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracking_(typography)

Re: Readability
yeah i was about to post about how you made no sense before your corrected yourself good 1
but literally OK the font is being read off a bitmap and tracking is manually set I can see that it must be a specific value in the executable, going to see if I can do it myself
btw according to that agreement you're not allowed to modify base.rte or open the source of any of the lua inside
so heh gg base.rte mods are illegal
as well as retrieving all the lua functions out of the executable

Re: Readability
Technically that makes all mods illegal, that haven't gotten express written permission.

Re: Readability
Well then, can someone in a position to ask for permission do so on behalf of all DRFF to mod?

Re: Readability
I think we've got a clearly established zero-giveadamn policy on this particular matter in place already.
Also, yeah, Cortex Command text is difficult to read, and that currently can't be changed via mod, and that blows. Well, you could use the 2x mode. But that has weird mouse sensitivity, so if you're a mouse user, that's probably not something you'd want to do.

Re: Readability
yeah it apparently doesn't care about the bitmap font files at all. data stores internal copies apparently.
lmao. nice anti-piracy schema. close ollydbg.exe if present. memory exception if it's started with a debugger attached. NOP NOP NOP NOP
got past that. massive amounts of crap where data stored everything in the executable.
bet data worked harder on that than on the lua implementation

Re: Readability
Then again, you all must remember that the game is data driven, and that you are only breaking the law by editing the executable, and not the content.

Except it was explicitly mentioned that we're breaking the law by editing the content.

Joe wrote: you are only breaking the law by editing the executable, and not the content. "Only breaking the law" implies there's nothing to be gained by hacking the executable. Daman wants bigger, more readable fonts, so he's going to hack the exe to get them, because it doesn't look to be editable from a content point of view. In other news, there seems to be some indication of the top left pixel of each letter in the fat and tiny font files (the ones the game uses), though I'm unsure as to weather it'll pay attention to them or not as I cant test it.

Re: Readability
Hack/edit the exe as much as you please as long as you keep it for personal use, as in, only for yourself. Plus nobody is going to know you edited it unless you scream 'I EDIT TEH EXE TROLOLOL' or whatever.
Nobody cares. I don't think that Dan would care either as long as you don't try stealin' his game and claiming it your own. I remember myself doing an edit on two back in the days. Though i'm not sure what exactly I edited, but I know it was for my B14 total conversion.
