Post Is CC really allergic to AMD?
Hello everybody,
first off yes, I have read the other threads:
Admins or devs; lag problems on a good pc?
WTF IS GOING ON?! Lower Spec, Higher CC Performance?!
Game runs very slowly on AMD Turion
And the help one too: How to make Cortex Command lag less. [V1.2.2]
I must say I am a bit shocked by the hostility the community shows towards anyone having issues with CC... I really do not understand this. I love the game, I have bought the game. I am just trying to solve a problem.

And my problem is this: I have 2 PCs, CoreDuo (not C2D!) notebook and AMD Phenom II 955 desktop. I believe no one will doubt the AMD is more powerful CPU, especially considering Intel sits on notebook motherboard. However on the Intel CC Build 22 runs in 1024x800 perfectly, no issues (normal slowdown on heavy gibing). However on my AMD desktop the CC Build 23 runs 800x600 at about 5 FPS (my guess - slow as hell, it even lags in the menu). The desktop is clean, antivirus in place, latest drivers (incl. AMD CPU driver).

Since I am obviously not the only one who is having this issue maybe it is worth investigating? Or is there any known issue with AMD processors that prevents them from properly running CC? I refuse to believe the AMD is half or less as fast in math computations than Intel - that would surely show up in other applications also.

I will gladly provide any more information as requested to help track this down. However so far it seems to me nobody is interested in any "debugging" in this matter. Do other AMD multi-core owners also have this issue? Or is it really just "random"?

Do you know of any reliable benchmark which benchmarks the kind of CPU operations CC uses? I would like to compare the score of my notebook and desktop using 3rd party utility - so we know if this is really problem of CC and not of the PC.

Thanks.

reliable ... CC

Yeah, that's the problem. The best benchmark we have is... try it. There's no method to it, really, and we can only go by generalities. If you're tried all the things mentioned in the topics you linked, then I don't really know what else you can try. Maybe setting the process affinity to one core?

Speaking of the linked topics...

The first two you linked had nothing insulting in them at all. The third, the OP decided that we weren't helping enough for his tastes and began comparing apples (HL2) to oranges (CC) in an attempt to tell us how fast Cortex should run. This does not indicate to us that he in interested in fixing his Cortex but that he wants to be right.
However, you are correct in noticing that we are a bit more of a "rough" board than some.

I must say, I am a bit shocked by the hostility of people posting for help in the support forum showing contempt for the people he is trying to solicit help from. I really do not understand this. We love helping people. Sometimes the posters forget that we are volunteers.

Seriously, man. If you want someone's help, the last way to get it is to start talking about how awful your audience is, or how we aren't interested in any debugging.

Guess what? The only individual capable of true debugging is Data. He is probably the only person with access to any source documentation. If there's an issue with the engine it's nothing we can help you with. That having been said, we're sorry we can't help you with something that is outside of our control.

No one who posts in this board is part of an official support team. There's no Bugtraq, there's no bug listserv. Just us volunteers.

Consider this: The game is an unfinished project. In my opinion, perpetually an unfinished project. By downloading beta software, you are opting to be that volunteer, too. The game comes with no express warranty, no guaranteed system compatibility. If it doesn't work for you, there's nothing we can do but say sorry and try some minor troubleshooting.

So, we would appreciate it if you would stop being so rude when all of us are here volunteering to help. The fact that anyone posts in any thread is indicative that we are more helpful than you give us credit for.

Oh, and to actually answer the meat of your question: yes, it is totally possible for a game to be allergic in its early stages to specific hardware configurations. Your attitude in this matter is clearly of someone ignorant of electrical and software engineering. The parts you put in or order for your desktop or laptop to not just automagically connect into this device that does pretty calculations.

There are a lot of nuts-and-bolts level interactions that can be altered by what would be interpreted as minor configuration changes. Hardware profiles can vary dramatically (and be impacted by) things like RAM timings, motherboards, audio and video chipsets, and storage devices. Each of these devices is nearly infinitely customizable. Not to mention there are an equally infinite amount of drivers for all of those devices.

But for the sake of argument, lets condense this argument to the major focal point: AMD devices. Why are you getting upset that a one-man programming team does not know the nuances of every processor out there on the market?. Not all processors are the same. Intel and AMD chipsets have their own separate instruction sets. Not all compilers are equal. Not all interpreters read human-readable code the same way. Errors happen!.

If you really want something done (instead of yelling at us), go yell at Data or Wizard James to install bugtraq.

Not that that will ever happen because they are both lazy bums.

I think he's trying to make us be ashamed of ourselves and the community...

BURN HIM WITH FIRE!

OT: Data is doing his best to keep optimizing the game and adding even more features to mess up the stability ect ect.

Meh, i think this thread is over. Thor actually said the very true fact about CC. If you have any requests for this thread, please PM me.
