These are my living quarters, and the ship is mine. It is a one-man skiff.
I normally carry nothing around; most of my job entails long trips out in deep space. When I am on planet, I usually have a small ballistic firearm. For serious missions, I use my AUG, a modified assault rifle that fires armor piercing SABOT flechettes. Don't ask where I got that beauty.
My ship is not technically armed, though it has a few tricks. Its primary armament is a multibarrel sling cannon, which fires long ropes with obscenely powerful electromagnets on the end. It's used to slow down rapidly moving debris and to sling it around, launching it back to whichever paying port is nearest. I also, highly illegally, carry a free-electron laser, which is capable of melting through most physical barriers.
The primary hazard of my job is actually sheer insanity, due to the lengths of time in which I am forced to stay in space. Other than that, I suppose a stray meteor might kill me. The last thing I worry about is any kind of actual confrontation, with, say, a violent customer.
The Empire is currently relatively intact, with fairly few major resistance parties; but we do have the constant threat of Buggie attacks, especially on the outlying regions of the Dozen Worlds. Out in the fringes of the Empire, decrees matter for little, but the Empire stops by once in a while to make sure the planets comply.
As a Slinger, I do not fall under any obligations to any government, although the Buggies will kill me as fast as any human. The Empire does not trouble Slingers; they have rather more important things to worry about, what with the whole intergalactic war with hostile aliens thing.

How was the earth destroyed?
The Buggies launched a projectile from the other end of the galaxy that was bound to Earth. The vehicle was a Bussard ramjet propelled antimatter bomb; by the time it hit the Earth, it was traveling at sixty seven percent of the speed of light. The bomb instantly went from several hundred kilometers outside the planet's atmosphere to directly inside it, where the gravitational field of the earth itself pulled a 10 kg raw carbon blank into a perfect antimatter copy of itself, causing an instant, non nuclear blast which wiped out the entire planet, instantly. This was the first event of the Ultimate War.
