Post A GPU Issue
So, we have an 8800 GT, a 2-year-old (or so) computer, and a problem.
See, the computer boots fine from the GT, but I'm seeing NO improvement from my old 256 MB DX9 card. Now, considering this new card is some $300, 512 MB factory over-clocked to ~600 MB, DX10, I would think there'd be SOMETHING. But no, it's benchmarking very near the old card. What's the deal here, DRL?

Important notes: Everything in this computer is working exactly as it was intended to. (except for the card) There is no malware or other software-related issues. This is hardware only. If you need more information, ask. Enjoy the tech puzzle, guys. I'm off to go do some sleuthing on this issue myself.

I'm going to go ahead and say you never set the computer to use the new card, based on you saying

Get the manual the new card came with, it explains everything.

You need to access the control panel, and disable your onboard graphics card or w/e came with the computer. Then enable the new card. If you just enabled the new card, the old one will still be active.

if the computer is as old as you say, its probably not a PCI Express card. The reason you are not seeing an extremely increased benchmark is because the old PCI bus is limited in max speed.

You can't just smack a high-end card in a low-end board.

Yeahno, it's a PCI Express board. My old card was not onboard. I have never used an onboard GPU, and they suck, so I hope never to. I know it's not a software issue (read: drivers)

Need moar infoez. Card manufacturer, and specific model number (not 8800GT. Go find the model number and who made it).

More than likely, your motherboard is not capable of transmitting data as fast as your GPU can process it and you are screwed until you upgrade your board.

So.

Buy sum new moboez.

Did you make sure the new card is the active one though?

If hes on a single card, with a single monitor, and can actually se something--then the card he put in is default.

If the expansion card wasn't active and default, he wouldn't be seeing anything on the monitor. If thats the case, he hasn't told us so.

X: There's no other GPU to be active...
THOR: It is not the mobo.
I THINK I figured out what the problem is...

Guessing? No, I'm looking for a second opinion. Maybe I should rephrase what I said.
I THINK I know what the problem is.

Mind telling me why? I really didn't put a whole lot of thought into what I said.. So it came out wrong. I also didn't put a whole lot of thought into my reason for this to be happening.
You wanna know what I think? I think it's the PSU. 2-year-old PSUs are definitely not very powerful.. Think about that for a moment. You'll see what I'm seeing.
