Anyone here into robot combat?
I am still greatly obsessed with Robot Combat. I wrote a homework assignment on how it changed my life. Skip the quote if you don't wanna read the whole thing, but at least read the bottom. Quote: When I was 4 or 3, I was quite a bit bored in my room. I had nothing to do, Magic Schoolbus wasn’t playing, and my dad was on the computer. I had just woke up, and I already ate breakfast. I decided to turn on my TV. Channel 1… 2… 3… All of the things were boring. Nothing appealed. CNN, BBC2, Discovery… BBC2? What is that? What is that yellow box? Is that a spider on it? What is that metal triangle? Why does the yellow box have 3 red lights?
This intrigued me. Then, I noticed something. A thing kept on moving back and forth, and kept shining on the camera. Then I heard the announcer commenting on the “absolute sheer destruction of Panic Attackâ€Â. What is Panic Attack? Then I noticed the yellow box was getting destroyed. I quickly made a connection in my head. Yellow Box… Holes… “absolute sheer destruction of Panic Attackâ€Â. Wow, I realized, they were destroying the Yellow Box named Panic Attack. By why? How did they not get hurt? The yellow box had 2 sharp spikes and just stabbed a grey metal box with spikes… A grey metal box with spikes?
I continued on watching this show. I then realized after 5 minutes… The boxes were robots. They were pitted in some awesome robot gladiator show. And I already learned what the grey box, the triangle, and the yellow box were. The yellow box was Panic Attack, the grey box with spikes Dead Metal, and the triangle was Shunt. They all were fighting. Then the commercials started rolling and I realized the show was called Robot Wars. I ran up to my dad to record it all the time, and he did. By the time I got back the show was over unfortunately. My dad looked up on the internet what time the show was going to be, and he got some VHSes and recorded them.
2 weeks later my dad started to record Robot Wars, and I watched them. I was now familiar with many of the robots, and I wanted to build my own. I don’t know why I liked the show, maybe it was because of the sheer awesomeness of robots destroying each other. I had a large amount of K’NEX, a building toy similar to legos. I started designing and making some designs, and I crashed them into each other. It was fun.
Eventually I started designing effective designs. My dad noticed I was into robots, so he showed me some documentaries about them. I kept watching them and watching them. Eventually I decided I wanted to build robots for my job. Already I was deciding on a career path, while some other kids wanted to be GI Joe or a dinosaur when they grew up.
When I moved to the US from England, I continued to watch robot fighting shows. The one here wasn’t robot wars, it was Battle Bots. I was building better and better robots, and when I got some sets that had motors I was thrilled. I had so many ideas, and when I was 5 I build a toy robot made form easy-to-break plastic that could flip over 5 pounds of weight and destroy a piece of paper. I also wasted a lot of aluminum foil, making my robots look similar to the ones I saw on TV. I became so obsessed with robots that I was building them whenever I can. It got to the point to where I have over 500 pounds (weight) of building toys and sets and kits.
Just me getting a glimpse of robots fighting for 3 seconds while flipping channels changed my life forever. Instead of sitting around playing with GI Joe and such, I was doing Multiplication when I was 5, and I was understanding engineering and design. Without me watching those 3 few seconds and paying attention, I would most likely end up being just a normal average student. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just better to be more advanced.
Anyways, commercially, robot combat has been totally dead, but right now th ecommunity is still alive and kicking. Here is one of the earlier series of robot war's episode parts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMmQeF7trX4

Re: Anyone here into robot combat?
Lets just say it went nearly the same way the mods section did: TOo many crappy robots and too many pwnage robots.
Battlebots ratings fell as soon as season 5's focus shifted from robot fighting to the camera man "accidently" focusing on Carmen Electra's boobs.
Robot wars died in the US when G4 bought TechTV (♥♥♥♥ g4! I hate them! I want my techtv!) and destroyed all but 3 shows, took 2 and converted them into G4 ♥♥♥♥ and left XPlay alone.
Robotwars died in the UK when 'five' bought it from BBC2. The fights for the most part in season 7 sucked anyway.
Robotica suffered with crappy reviews, people wanted more fighting and less innovation and gauntlets.
Robotwars from up to series 2 was the best. I don't like the series 3 and on format of just fights. I liked it when innovation and genius was considered in play, so its brains and brawn over "lulz i got the best weaponzz".
As I mentioned before though, the smaller hobby non-commercial comptetitions as still alive and kicking it. I wish to build a 12 pounds "hobbyweight" and enter it in SWARC.

Re: Anyone here into robot combat?
I once asked my dad if we could make something and go up to robot wars. But, I was like.. 7, and my dad is good with computers, not robots.
Still, would have been fun.

Re: Anyone here into robot combat?
robot wars became ♥♥♥♥ after the robots stopped ripping each other apart and started merely bumping into each other.
we lost all the pwnage things; chainsaws, crushers, tank-treads, axes, pneumatic spikes, sledgehammers, the lot, and we replaced them all with f*cking flippers.
that was when my childhood died.

Re: Anyone here into robot combat?
Hehe, I loved robot wars. Some episodes were truly fun to watch when a robot was totally raped by the opposing robot's ripsaws and spikes.
Sgt. Bash ftw. : 3

Re: Anyone here into robot combat?
Meh, the only saw that didn't suck was dead metal's. But he was a rigged house robot anyways. SGT bash pwned only after I believe the 3rd seaseon when he got his pinchers. Flippers are the best weapon IMO, we neede more [not sucky] crushers and such. THe only good crushers I can recall are Kan Opener and the famed Razer. The others, especially the Ming bots, tetanus, and totally PLunderbird 4 were a joke. OH, and also, the pneumatic spikes all sucked. my fave bots in the dif series: 1. Robot the Bruce 2. CASSIUS and PANIC ATTACK! 3.Mortis 4. Razer 5. Tornado 6. Tornado 7. Didn't see 8. wasn't made I wonder what happened to the arena after robotwars. I heard that the arena is sitll used, and that they cut it in half and ship them to places to be reassembled and then used in ompetitions. I dunno abut that one seeing hpw the arena is ♥♥♥♥ big and heavy, and threres the dropzone.... Saws sucked in general, everyoneone thought their vorpal saw would go snicker snack and then leave the other one dead, with it head, as the robot goes spinning galloumphing back. NO chainsaws did well except for Matilda's and the only thing it was useful was to cut into crappy robots and destroy Plunderbird's antennae Deadmetal FTW after saw upgrade. Infact, all of the house robots FTW after the upgrades. THe onle one that wasn't upgraded I think were shunt, refbot, and sir K. The flywheel > weaj chainsaw. Stong force onto the robot with saw > weakass joined weenie. Jaws of life> Retarded-ass stickthingy. Growler was a joke. He was cool, but nevertheles a joke. The only thing he was good at was ramming and scooping thebots with unusually hih ground clearance, and dragging them int he pit. Mr psycho was weird and his hammer didn't really do much, but he was damn straight at picking up bots. Series 7 jumped the shark. Cassius Chrome sucked just so much. EDIT: Oh, and Phillipa Forrester OWNS the weird girl in seies 7.

I was always partial to kinetic rammers. Either they rammed you with the entire robot, or they had a hydraulic press. I also liked flingers, too.
