The move is intended to ensure that children are not exposed to sex as a routine by-product of the internet. It follows warnings about the hidden damage being done to children by sex sites. The biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, are being called to a meeting next month by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, and will be asked to change how pornography gets into homes. Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called "opting out" - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to "opt in." The new initiative is in advance of the imminent convergence of the internet and television on one large screen in the living room. i know alot of you here will disagree with this move, but i think its a good thing, a generation of kids growing up with ass-to-mouth porn cant be a good thing for society. Plus, the parents of todays children are not as educated to the internet as our kids and people in their 20's (Generally) are today. That said, i dont think this will pass because well, the one who doesnt go along with it will use it in an advertising campaign probably to get one up on the rest of the companies, and i hate how these get talked about because of the "Think of the children" mentality. |

Well you're right, I disagree with you. I find that letting the government impose controls on any form of communication usually turns out to be a horrible, horrible mistake. Not to mention, this medium in particular is entirely impossible to control unless you cut it off entirely. |

I don't believe that it's the government's place to control personal (ie. doesn't directly affect others) vices. Look what happened with the 1920's Alcohol Prohibition, or with marijuana. People will get what they want, and if it's illegal, then criminals will supply. All this will do is ruin a legitimate part of the economy and make it a source of income for gangs. I mean, it probably won't be as intense as drugs, but the concept is the same. And who's to say porn is bad for kids? My parents let me see Team America when I was 10 (and I have seen lots of porn since then, let's be honest), and I turned out just fine. What's the harm in it? In fact, I think it's better to slowly introduce kids to sex so they aren't confused when they start going through puberty or go apeshit crazy when they first see something that resembles a tit. |

Either it's going to be some cheap filter list that you bypass with a html proxy, or then it's going to be North-Korea #2 "Think of the children" is the best way to push censorship and opression through, closely followed by copyrights. Who's going to define "porn"? It has... Sex? Erotica? Genitalia? Suggestive undertones? Something that can in some way be interpeted as even remotely sexual? People? Lawn-mowers? ... Parents already "opt-in" by having an internet connection and giving their children access to it. I have no idea how ♥♥♥♥ up the british goverment is, but still, this passing seems like a far fetch. Oh, and out of all things, sex seems like the last thing to taboo. Cheers, some christian insane guy who mutilated his genitalia in fear of God. |

Freedom of spee- Oh, right, the UK. Nothing to see here, move along folks.... If this were ever to happen in America, I'd be pissed. First the government gropes people in the airport, then they want to control what people see? Serious infringement upon your basic rights. Also, you can't police the ♥♥♥♥ internet, get with the program you stupid cyber police. |

It's sort of wrapping us up in bubble wrap and putting us in a box, and that's quite degrading. |

Yeah you bring up a really important point, findude. Like McDonalds, the adults have power to cut their kids off from stuff. Hell, you can even programs to block porn. |

Oh I was too slow. Well I spent a time writing it! So: Even if it did pass, the only even remotely feasible way to block porn would be a filter list. Those need to get updated, and can be wrong. Oh and are trivial to bypass. Check out lapsiporno.info sometime, we had some ♥♥♥♥ here a long time ago. Police blocked a vacuum manufacturer site on the grounds of child porn. Okaaay. Any sort of color/shape recognition based blockers (that violate privacy to a humongous extent) are trivial to bypass by simply switching to a different sort of content. If you run out of said content, you probably have lost access to google. Oh and you couldn't watch archery tournaments. It just can't even be properly done. Let alone is in any way sane to do, was it possible in some way. |

Yeah, I was thinking about the colossal task of indexing every site that hosts pornography, and then checking twice to see if it's true. And even if they do manage to list all porn, what about new sites that get started up? Unless they rake the whole web for keywords or images on a regular basis, like Findude said, and use actual manpower to filter it. |
