I want to upgrade my processor, a AMD Sempron 3500+, but I'm not sure what restrictions I have other then the socket, AM2. |

You got price and power supply. Those are your two main restrictions, but are second to the socket itself. |

Don't worry about your PSU, CPUs use so little power it won't matter. Price and socket are all you need to worry about. You WILL, however, have to reinstall your operating system. |

I wasn't worrying about the PSU, since I just upgraded it, but why will I need to reinstall my OS? Isn't that stored on the harddrive? |

Yeah but it configures itself to your hardware when you install it. If you replace either your motherboard or your CPU, you need to reinstall. |

I do not see the logic in that. Why would it be bad not to reinstall it? I never reinstalled mine after switching from an E8400 to a Q9400. |

Imagine a world where a Geo Metro and a Bugatti Veyron are identical. What if I switch your daily driver, overnight, from a Geo Metro to a Bugatti Veyron, without you noticing? Are you going to be driving at the capacity of a Geo Metro, or are you going to somehow magically know that you're in a Bugatti Veyron now? No, you're not, because you're not magic, and neither are computers. |

But if they're identical, why would it matter? |

He pretty clearly means visually identical, not physically. |
