So, I went to see the movie "The Last Airbender" a day ago, which is based off of the animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Here's my review. -- Short Review -- Don't waste your time and money on this movie whether or not if you liked/watched the animated series. Characters in the movie have completely opposite personailites then what they have in the animated series, a few major characters are absent completely, and VERY major events in the animated are not in the movie, or the events are there but are VERY DIFFERENT. The element bending (for those who don't know what that means, bending is the term used for manipulating elements) was not so good. The movement of the elements was very slow, its surprising how characters usually can't seem to dodge the attacks. Characters will also do unneccessary complex aerobatics before executing attacks. Isn't that dandy. Oh, and the movie is only for "Book One: Water" of the animated. -- More In-Depth Review -- Major character run-down: Katara - Probably my favorite character in the animated, next to Toph. In the animated, she's kind of hot-headed and pretty stubborn, yet she's still smart, kind, and loving. In the movie, she cries all the time and has no motivation to do much of anything. Aang - Main character guy. He's a go-lucky happy kid who takes risks in the animated, and is very skilled in all bending (once he learns them). BUT that all changes when he goes on the big screen. In the movie, he's depressed most of the time, and looks a little to young to be messing with those Fire Nation guards. Oh yeah, and he seems wimpy. Appa - A man's best friend is a dog, while an Avatar's best friend is a flying animal. Appa is a flying bison, who responds to Sokka's jokes and sarcasm, and in the movie he has no personality and does nothing except provide transportation. Momo - Aang's pet flying lemur. He... doesn't really do anything major in the animated, except for saving a very valuable water bending scroll from a primitive parrot, which you could probably guess that he does not do such a thing in the movie. Sokka - Known as the "Plan Guy" and "Boomerang Guy" in the gang. In the animated series, he cracks jokes most of the time, talks sarcasticly, and likes to eat meat. Aaand we go to the movies, where he's a straight talker, does not say a single joke, veerry serious, and DOES NOT TRY TO EAT MOMO. COME ON NOW. Zuko - He's hot-headed, not very patient, and has that "Get outa my way or I'll kick your ass" attitude. As you probably guessed it, he is more calm and more patient in the movie. Zuko also appears to be the most physically changed. In the animated, he is light-skinned and (in book one: water) has a mostly shaved head with a non-curly pony-tail, which is supposed to represent royalty. He has a full head of curly hair in the movie, has dark skin, and is physically unatractive. Iroh - Zuko's uncle. Fat, cheery, and wise are probably his most notable traits in the animated series. He is not fat, not cheery, and doesn't seem as wise in the movie. AND HE DOESN'T PLAY PI SHO IN THE MOVIE. Suki - Kick-ass girl who doesn't bend, but exels in martial arts. A major character in "Book Three: Fire", also she falls in love with Sokka later on. OMG SHE'S NON-EXISTANT IN THE MOVIE. Azula - She's evil to the core in the animated, in perfect shape, rarely looks helpless but often looks hot. In the movie, she looks like a chubby helpless little girl that lacks heat. Paku - In the animated, he was a jerk who thought females were inferior when Aang and the gang first met him, but he changed his ways. Powerful water bender who taught Katara and kinda taught Aang (the only progress Aang made was learning how to build a snowman). He is too happy with Katara and Aang in the movie... You might even think he's a pediphile. Zhao - High-ranking general in the Fire Nation. He's a cruel, heartless man in the animated who would rather destroy something in his path than walk around it. Isn't that dandy. Also, in the movie, Fire Benders (excluding Iroh) had to draw fire from a source, such as a lantern, and could not actually create fire, just manipulate it. In the animated, fire benders could create fire at will, even the common fire bender soldiers. Review on events: I'm not going to talk about this in-depth, 'cause it might spoil the movie for those who actually want to see this film if I compare specific events from the animated with the events in the movie. I really liked the series. However, the instant I saw the trailer for The Last Airbender I knew that it would be a bad movie. M. Night Shyamalan was the worst choice for director. I can't remember him ever doing comedy in any of his movies. All of the actors seem like bad choices. From what I've heard, the actor playing Zuko was the only one who did alright. The casting for the entire movie project, not just the actors, was extremely bad... it's like it was meant to fail. The people who have watched Avatar: The Last Airbender don't want to see a live action version, they want new content. You know what's going to happen. Another issue, this movie is coming in parts. Hey, it was good for Lord of the Rings, right? That's because LotR did it RIGHT. They made the movies in quick succession, one after the other. This movie, however, is not that way. The first book's movie has been released, and the sequels have been claimed bv M. Night Shyamalan. But it seems that the next book hasn't even started production. Humor is the heart and soul of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Without that, the series wouldn't have been interesting to watch at all. M. Night Shyamalan probably wasn't the best choice as director for such a movie. /rant |

 I must agree that it looks shocking. Although I've only seen bits of the first two books, if Aang is not fooling around, and wise-cracking meat eater is not cracking wises and eating meat, then the film has lost what I enjoyed watching in the animated series. |

I was a fan of the series, but when i heard that they where making a live actor movie, I immediately had low expectations for it. I took my little brother to see it, and it wasn't quite as bad as I had assumed, but it didn't convey the plot and charicter development that series had. Many characters weren't portrayed falsely, and they seemed very two dimensional compared to the show. Many plot aspects vital to the series where left out completely (Roku, Kyushu warriors). All in all, as a kids movie its alright, but many of the things like plot that made the show appealing to all ages were left out. |

Wow, this was really that bad? I heard it sucked, but man. Shamalamadingdong must've really screwed it up. Guess I won't be going to see it. |
