Post kinda off-topic, kinda not... mostly crabs
i seriously just joined this forum so i could share...

How unbelievably, massively, COMPLETELY impressed with how many crabs I can have exploding on screen without any significant lag, crashing, errors, sprite "erasure," or other problems occurring.

You are some seriously skilled programmers. Seriously.

multiple explodey-crab dropships on screen at once, and not a glitch. And the games not even DONE yet. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good shot of the action before i killed myself with the crab onslaught, but the "loss" count should speak for itself...

Very impressive.

You must have one hell of a rig, then, because this game isn't nearly as optomised as it may seem.

Also, welcome!

Actually, that's one of the reasons that I'm impressed by it... My machine isn't all that spectacular - it's just a MacBook Pro from ~2007. It's a Core2Duo, but it's definitely not new, and certainly not powerful but modern standards.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome =]

Hah, that's pretty awesome. I can't get half that many crabs without lag.

Press Ctrl+P, then do it again. It'll show a framerate counter and other such stuff. Let's see how fast this is really going.

Ok - the first collection is from various times of blowing up multiple crab-carriers containing ~40/each - remember I said significant lag, not no lag =D The lag experienced by the player is far different than the lag experienced by the computer. I tried to grab the shots when the particle count was the highest, or at least close to it.

Also - the damage to the dropship on the far right? Yeah, that was crabs =D

As far as I'm concerned, 28-38FPS and sub .50TS are still very playable, as they only last for about 3/4 of a second - it's actually rather hard for me to get good shots because the particle count climbs and the FPS goes back up to the 100 range fairly quickly. It would seem that the initial computations of the particle trajectory is the most intensive.

This next one is from 2x 260 crab dropships. Yes, 520 crabs on screen, exploding, as far as i'm concerned, is completely unplayable. For about a full 3 seconds.

That's still rather good. Try something like Shook's Zero Division bomb and see what fps that takes you down to.

Spoilers: Mac CC runs faster and cleaner than windows CC.

EDIT: also, the legs spawning at the origin thing has been bugging me for ages, why hasnt that been fixed? is there some sort of issue with position inheritance. see it in this shot, top left.

I'm pretty sure he's just running it on the lowest possible(stock) resolution.
Which isn't that impressive, I get to run that at an average of 400 fps.
But still, this makes macs actually worth the effort.

Hax: Intel MBP 2,1 Core2Duo@2.33Ghz, 3GB RAM, 256MB Radeon-something-or another

Maart3n: Actually - i'm running it at 800x600 not 640x480- anything larger, and it's too much of a chore to read the text, unfortunately. It looks cleaner at higher resolutions, but it's just not fun for me to squint =)

and if you go too big, it kind of takes away from the classic pixel like gameplay...

true, now that you say it I think I am pretty much f***ing up my eyes with 1440 900, but any lower and I get 500 fps which just isn't playable...
although If you go multiplayer it is nice to actually have something to look at that isn't 320/240.(quad multi on 640/480.)

Btw that 2.33 is running it pretty slow then, I've got a 2.66(i5) and I can get atleast 400 fps on that resolution.
But the crabbomb result was quite high though.

and about the pixel gameplay, it is still there, atleast on my 19".
