Leave Your Computer On?
Don't let your computer's processing power go to waste! Get BOINC, and join up with a research team who needs your unused POWER. I myself run BOINC for Rosetta@home, towards the research of proteins and their three dimensional structure. Very important stuff. This is totally free and, with the proper settings, totally not a burden to you or your computer. There is no reason not to run this program.

I don't know how I lived before I got Boing! After I downloaded and installed Boing onto my computer I really felt like I was making a difference. Thanks Boing EDIT: I didn't realize it was spelt BOINC, damn my infertility may allah be praised, because you're worth it AMEN.

Re: Leave Your Computer On?
I am not sure if it will download some illegal content onto my computer when I'm not looking.
If you really want your Idle Processing Power to be used, host a dedicated server in L4D or TF2 or something.

It will not download anything harmful to your computer. These organizations have gotten a lot of media. They are very serious, important groups. Rosetta, the one I go with, is associated with Berkeley College. Do you think Berkeley is going to give you Spyware? It's not. Really.

I used SETI@home for a while, but it got intrusive so I uninstalled.

I am currently working on phase 2 of human proteome folding (Which is, I believe, the same project as the OP's) and curing childhood cancer. I was introduced by Dinosaur Comics and joined their team. I've seen no evidence of spyware or adware or other malicious content and have honestly seen absolutely no decrease in performance on any level. I love it.

Still, this has no nasties.
The only way I see you could get in trouble is if your country bans cryptography.
My computer goes into standby a lot. During web browsing it auto-underclocks.

I'm not getting this because I want humanity to whither and die out.

It will not download anything harmful to your computer. These organizations have gotten a lot of media. They are very serious, important groups. Rosetta, the one I go with, is associated with Berkley College. Do you think Berkley is going to give you Spyware? It's not. Really. You mean media attention? I'm sure these serious important groups are very serious and important but I think hackers are perfectly capable of being both serious and important. Serious and important could very easily be applied to Conficker. And Berkeley? Or do you actually mean Berkley, the university that's down the street and somewhat shadier? Because I think this "Berkley" place might just be giving me this "Spyware" stuff. You can never be sure with them Berkley guys.

Re: Leave Your Computer On?
Well it mightn't be significant on its own, but it's slightly more than nothing, which eventually adds up...

It's like voting - your one vote doesn't really matter if you were to look at it that way, but you still vote, right? This program has been around for awhile, and you can look around for a bit if you want, but I don't think anyone's ever had any problems as a result of downloading this program. Understanding how proteins do their thing in your body is essential for better understanding human biology in general. On one hand, this information could and is used for the development of new and better medicine. You don't care about that though, so think of it another way: how are scientists ever going to make the dream that is Cortex Command a reality without a more comprehensive understanding of human biology?
