Let me preface this by saying that I have googled for about an hour with no luck.
A friend of mine has a computer that compulsively censors out words it finds objectionable as she types them, yet I cannot find any examples of such an application. I unfortunately do not have physical access to the machine in question, so I can't browse around for likely candidates.
I've heard of web filters and net nannies and the like, but I've never heard of an application that does this.
Two part question.
1. What would this kind of application be classified as, besides parental control software?
2. Where can I find a list of them?

It censors in EVERY application?

Wow, that's some bull♥♥♥♥.

Uh, the easiest way to remove it would probably be to reformat. Make sure to back up all data and just wipe it clean.

He doesn't want to get rid of it, he wants to get it.
I haven't heard of anything of this nature....

Search for the following:

Content filtering software
Parental control software
Content control software

Usually one of those should pop up with something. I'm willing to bet things like NetNanny and CyberPatrol have this functionality.

Gotta say though, I'm implicitly against this kind of crap (this word filtering). All you're doing is reinforcing that these words are bad (and giving him impetus to say them to make daddy mad).

If you do decide to do this, consider only preventing incoming text from showing bad language. That way the kid never even sees the words that he isn't supposed to say.

Think of it as saying "Now, Jimmy, dammit is a bad word! Bad word!" Now the kid knows the word is bad and that they can irritate you with it (as I am sure as a parent, you are aware of how they excel at that ).

Actually, I'm not a parent, I'm just very curious as to what the heck this application is. As I said, I've never heard of an application able to censor as you type.

Bur, my bad.

Still, shouldn't be too hard. All it would do is read the buffer from the keyboard and if it sees a key string that isn't allowed, it dumps the buffer.

you could always just uninstall it. it can be done, its not like it's spyware or anything, oh wait....
to get rid of it, try A) uninstalling, B) spybot C) anti-virus programs D) If you know how, "Hijack This".

I can see no reason to find said program, I can see no reason to ruin a computer to get rid of it, and I can however see plenty of reasons that said program shouldn't exist in the first place. However I am curious to see what the list of words it does and doesn't censor are.

How is reformatting a computer ruining it?

My god you're retarded.

Also I guess this whole topic needs to learn to read, myself included, because Duh never said what he wanted to do with it.

it would ruin my computer because I have no install disk for any OS, and this is the only working comp in the apartment.

Not everyone bought non-oem windows Grif -_-". And the there are the people that lost/threw away the death disk of doom, never wanting to see it again...
Anyway, that was sorta unnecessary...

unfortunately that, and this, are also unnecessary, since he was right, this thread wasn't about me. I've made my point about re-formating can mess up peoples computers if they don't have a backup or an os that doesn't go away with a format (which means it probably wouldn't get rid of the aforementioned program.).

All discussion of removing it is really moot, since I still can't find what the heck it could be. That, and in this particular instance I don't have access to the computer in question and my friend would not be up to the task of removing a particularly tenacious piece of software.
Thanks for the interesting information though.
And finally, since this was apparently the main point of confusion, I wanted to find it for purely curiosity's sake. If I had access to the computer that had it I would try to remove it, since it is quite annoying, but I don't.
