Tribes II - SHAZBOT! It's back!
I hope I can get enough of the DRL community in on this to make this a legitimate thread, but: http://www.tribesnext.com/infoYeah, guess what T2 veterans: Tribes II is back. And online. At the very least, those of you who actually know about this semi-obscure game will be overjoyed by this news. For those of you who don't: Tribes 2 is a highly team-based, strategic, first person shooter in three dimensions. "Wat. Aren't all FPSes in 3D now?" Yes, they are. Tribes claims to be the first series which actually uses all three dimensions, though, and I would agree with that claim. No longer are you constrained to walking planes and climbing and falling off of the occasional ladder, staircase, or ledge. Similarly to Cortex Command, your warriror is equipped with a multidirectional jetpack which can propel you several hundreds of feet at a time. So what's different? Tribes takes the FPS and makes it team-based, like Team Fortress 2. Even with adequate skill, you're likely to be blown apart by the enemy team if you try to be a lone wolf. You will have to work together to disable the enemy for long enough to grab their flag, and work even harder to defend your flag from being grabbed. Vehicles also encourage further cooperation, most requiring a team of players to be used effectively. Take control of a Thundersword Bomber and annihilate the enemy base from the skies (with the help of two buddies), or take a WildCat Hover Bike and race to a sniping position behind the enemy. Tribes is also a strategy game. You have deployable automatic turrets to defend your base which can chew through enemies in seconds, deployable mines to hide a surprise for unexpected antagonists, as well as a network of team buildings which must be maintained in order to keep the assault up. Enemies can take out your "equipment lockers" (called Inventory Stations), or take out the generator powering your automated defense turrets and screw your team over for quite a while until the problem is sorted out. The buildings hold as much influence in the game as the players do themselves. Also included are a plethora of weapons, from the classic Spinfusor, a explosive blue disc launcher which is the unofficial symbol of the Tribes series, to the Mortar gun, which is a high explosive launcher which will take you and your base out for a picnic at the cemetery. Not to mention the "augmentations" (called "Packs") which can shield your warrior, increase your energy supply (which powers weapons and your jetpack), repair other warriors and buildings (think the Medic Gun from TF2, minus invulnerability), cloak you (Spy Watch from TF2), jam sensors, and allow you to deploy remote Inventory Stations near the enemy's base to more adequately rape the enemy base. Not to mention, the great number of modifications for the game (which aren't that popular right now; Shifter Mod is pretty fun, but does contain some fairness-upsetting weapons) tl;dr?: Tribes II = Cortex Command, minus gold, destructible terrain, base-building and dropships/rockets; plus 3D, online multiplayer, vehicles, teamwork, usable buildings (for attaining equipment/defending bases) and sensors. Here is the dilemma: Tribes II is a game which is much more enjoyable in extremely large numbers. The Goon Central server has had upwards of 50 players on it at a time (and man is that hectic). The active DRL community is not that large, but even 8 on 8 would be a blast. At the very least, we could find another server to call home (Goon Central?) and play on there. Anyone interested? Reply here.

I keep meaning to download this, maybe I'll leave the download on overnight sometime.
Will certainly play when I get round to it, anyway.

Known about this for a while and it is most excellent. Also Tribes Vengeance still has a good community and at least 3 or 4 servers with constantly about 30-40 people, check it out.

If I DL it and it works and I like it, I'm in.
Assuming I get around to it, of course. It sounds good, and I've been meaning to install it, so I might actually do so now.

Yeah. I'm doing great, thanks CrazyMLC. Just needed a break from EXTREME FOURMING for a while so I could get my academics back on track. Not 100% there, but I've certainly improved. Pix for Clix: I think this guy has a customized HUD. He is also running at a low resolution. I can get my native 1200x800. Rawr. He's a heavy (no, there are no huge miniguns, unfortunately. also, oxymoronftw.). When you see 3 of these coming at your base, you will ♥♥♥♥ bricks. Evil Frosted Muffins wrote: Known about this for a while and it is most excellent. Also Tribes Vengeance still has a good community and at least 3 or 4 servers with constantly about 30-40 people, check it out. My Tribes head friend and I both think Vengeance is a different game. Yeah, it's got the blue-plate special, and a lot of other weapons from the older games. It is enjoyable to play online (not the story mode though. A few moments in the story mode, but otherwise plagued by bad voice acting and crappy AI.). But it's just not Tribes. They put much less of a emphasis on teamwork and more of an emphasis on Sonic. As in, "GOTTA GO FASTER, HOLD DOWN SPACE TO SKI ALL THE TIME LOLOOLOLOLOL." Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but it just changes the whole dynamic of the game. Plus, it's so obscure that very few people know about it. This did not prevent me from buying the game off of Ebay though. It was fun for a while, but got old quickly. Don't mean to troll here, Evil Frosted Muffins, but Tribes 2 is coming back; I think it was the better of the two sequels to Starsiege: Tribes. BTW: We should all get each other's screen names. Betcha can't guess mine.

I have this game, played a short round of team hunters with Skiv the other day. I'd like to try the vehicle modes.

It won't let me register an account, it just gives me errors when I try to finish with the username and password, then it all crashes if I alt-tab, and I have to end the process from task manager.

I used to love this game. The Goons server seems to be the biggest, I wouldn't be surprised if you can actually get 32 vs 32. Yes, 32 vs 32. It is utter madness, you see formation flying with two shrikes guarding a bomber or a fully loaded transport, and I tell you it is ridiculously awesome.

Well, just had a pretty fun (short) game with Skiv and bots. They got of course totally dominated.
