MAJOR Overheating issues
Hey guys, Did you miss me?
So I've been having some serious problems as of late. I started noticing a general slowdown of my computer and increased lag about a week-2 weeks ago, and figured it was nothing. Eventually it got so bad that I did some investigating. Turns out my cpu is running under heavy load at ABOVE 100c!!!
It has never been this high, usually running in the 40's. Only recently it started freaking out. I have not installed anything hardware wise, no major changes, etc. I've had a geek squad friend come over and take a quick look at it, and we did all the obvious things like clean the heatsink and fans, etc. Well, that got it to be around 75-80 during idling, but still gets insanely hot during games.
I've googled a bit, but did not come up with anything that I haven't already checked. PSU should be fine, was working before and I have done nothing to it. No viruses, Did a full scan, etc.
Please help, I know it can't take much longer under that much heat. I'm still working on looking for fixes. I'm using Hardware monitor to monitor it. Will report back with any updates.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Did you change the layout of the room? Poor ventilation or heaters could be causing it. Also, by lag do you mean the computer lags, or the internet.

Check if the heatsink is secure and if none of the mounting notch's are broken or loose. I would also recommend that you change your thermal paste if you haven't done it.

If his computer is hot enough to literally boil ♥♥♥♥ water, it's not gonna be ventilation. Thanatos; Your heatsink is undoubtedly busted. Buy a new one. There's NOTHING that I can think of aside from heatsink problems which would cause that. In before Thor swoops in and tells me something I'm forgetting.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Sorry, but I've checked the heatsink and fan, cleaned it, and reaplied therman paste. That got it down a tiny bit, but again, meh.
Also, I just put in 2 extra fans, making it idle at 65-67C, which is in the yellow for me.
And no, room layout is same as before, and I took care to check for air flow where I placed it.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Air flow wouldn't cause it to overheat like that. Your heatsink is malfunctioning and until you find another cause you're an idiot.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Try too see if someone has a spare heatsink and try theirs. Chances are you overlooked something. If not....then something might be very wrong with your CPU. Actually....check the clock speeds NOW. One of my friends once tried changing them as a joke. I caught him, but in hind-sight it would probably cause a scenario like this.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
I've checked all clock speeds multiple times, etc. And no, heat sink is not damaged, I switched it out, same.
However, I just stacked 2 fans on top of each other (only room left) and put them right on top of my cpu, on the other side, and now I'm idling at 56-58C. That's an improvement I guess... but It still spikes WAY to easily.
Also, on a side note, I just finished a little mod for my computer, I added a 12v light to the back to see all my ports, wired to a switch on the side of my case. Oh my god does it help. And soooo much fun to play with. (yes, my psu can handle that)

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Well when you come up with a better idea, tell me. I'll be over here idling at 30c

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Than, is your CPU, GPU, or anything stressed out? ie doing any massive calculations. Also get speedfan.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Ten tips to help your computer stay cool. 1. Use pressurized air to remove dust form your computer large buildups of dust can cause heat retention inside your case as well as slow down your fans.
2. Check your fans; Are they spinning correctly? Are the bearings in good condition? Are any of the blades bent?
3. Consider buying a PCI fan some can move a lot of air and they really can help keep your CPU fan.
4. If your case and/or CPU fans are over 5 years old I would recommend purchasing new ones.
5.Make sure your computer is in a location away from sunlight and its fans are not facing any walls.
6.Sometimes overheating can be due to lack of power. Check your power supply and make sure it is in good condition and is not being too stressed.
7. You can remove your side panel and drill ventilation holes if necessary.
8.All CPU's come with a thermal gel on them to keep them cool your thermal gel could have possibly run out try putting on more or replacing your current thermal gel.
9. Check if your CPU fan has anything under it such as dust or dirt.
10. Lastly be sure as not to over stress your Computer by leaving it on for extended periods of time.
And that's about it hope I helped.

Re: MAJOR Overheating issues
Hmm... if the thermometers were broken, would that tell the cpu to underclock, even if it wasn't actually at that temp?
Also, quick checklist: 1. Already cleaned my computer with compressed air 2. This computer is 6 months 3. Computer is under my desk and has the air intake is facing outward. 4. Power should be fine. I have not added anything since I got it, and it was fine back then. However, if it somehow was damaged, then I wouldn't know how to check 5. Side panel already has ventilation holes. 6. I've recently reapplied arctic silver 5, so it should be fine. I took care to make sure the heatsink was pinned down correctly. 7. Temperatures that I posted are usually around 15 mins or so after I turn it on.
