@Miles_T3hR4t I usually skip or skim through your posts, too long. Though sometimes I actually read through posts, I don't read the ones about modding, lua and such.

Re: Why the hostility?
@metal chao When did we start talking about moral code? I think you are little bit on confused side here. To clarify. I'm not against punishing people who fail or don't want to understand. I want first of all everyone to behave reasonably. Secondly I want to leave such matters to moderators, users should stay away and refrain from littering forum with useless posts. Moderator explains politely situation to delinquent why his post/thread was deleted (so he won't just start new one while wondering what happened to first). If that doesn't help then mod cleans all litter left by and bans said person. Simple. No insulting flaming and stuff like that. User who just made stupid mistake by asking some "done to death" question because didn't used search function will know to do so next time, if he wants to play "hard way" then we can say goodbye and don't come back. Keep trolls away while refraining from flaming/insulting/scaring away potentialy worthy users.
@Miles_T3hR4t So ok most of users have "I'm a tough guy" attitude. This is a problem but only when forum is moderated by users, if everything would be handled by mods I don't see a problem. If someone has gone too far with their attitude mod will be there to issue warning/ban delete useless and offensive posts. Forum is clean and everyone but trolls is happy.

Not to say Saltydog is a bad moderator, but the last time he made a post was May 18, and hasn't done anything so far, Skiv is a different story, he's been doing good so far. (unless Salty has something happening on his end, or if he's was told to do something else) Grif was, so was Daman. Then something happened, but I can't remember.

Re: Why the hostility?
I've been a moderator more than once and always removed on fairly superfluous reasons but hey I'm not running the forum.
If I was, you'd all be either banned or have left voluntarily.

Then I obviously wasn't here long enough to see them as moderators.

Re: Why the hostility?
Dude some of this stuff is just inane. The game's violence makes us violent and aggressive? My god man are you really that daft? That is some freaking soccer mom logic right there. Also a lot of us are not nerds bro, and much fewer I would wager, have actually been beaten up. Please do not try to use the moral high ground champ, makes you seem foolish. Also hardly anyone reads all your posts because they are ridiculously long and say so little. Stop trying to be a special snowflake man. I'm not even trying to be rude here, just think from a third person's view before you post, "Does this make sense". Hell, hire a 5th grader to point out any errors in your judgment and logic, because I think even they could see them. Again, no offense.

Re: Why the hostility?
What are you talking about miles? You are so stereotyping forums to be a congregation of nerds and people who suck at life. I mean honestly, that's probably the minority of the people here. Stop with your non-logical logic, por favor.

Re: Why the hostility?
I would like to take this time to say that in my high school nerds were considered the upper class. It helped that the nerds were also the star athletes and the rest of the school populace were either druggies or underachievers or just didn't care, but.... janekk wrote: ok maybe I was little quick to agree on Grif as moderator. Get used to the abrasiveness and you begin to see the sense included in every post!

Re: Why the hostility?
The hostility hurts, but makes better men. I was one of those noobs, maybe not the grammar so much, but everything else, and I kinda had a problem with randomly capitalizing words that aren't very important.
It made me a better man online overall.

Re: Why the hostility?
Heck, even I was a mod over this very forum. I didn't do much and was quietly let loose, which was perfectly fine with me.
It's tempting to stereotype everyone on the forum (it saves time, after all), but I've known for a long time that it's futile to try to glean any truly significant amount of information about anyone based on their online persona. People can take as much time and space as they want while expressing an opinion here, and they are able to do it completely anonymously. Attempting to justify someone else's actions by slapping a stereotype on them and creating an imaginary setting in which they live is completely unreasonable, and usually tells more about the poster than the intended audience.
We've seen a fair amount of testimony here in favor of the allegedly corrosive atmosphere that pervades these fora, in large part given by the people who maintain that atmosphere, and in no small part by those who believe that they became better forum members because of it. We've also seen some statements to the contrary. I could count the latter group on one hand, and, save for Miles, those people have not yet reached 100 posts, and so could simply be in that process. Of course, it could just as easily be that those with differing opinions are influenced against posting by that atmosphere.
Personally, I think that a self-perpetuating culture is important in a forum, such that moderators do not have to force the community to live up to idealistic standards. From what I've seen, this community lives up to that rather well, and I'd be perfectly happy with a continuation of present policy. We do ultimately turn people away, but if people lack the self-confidence and intelligence to stand up to harsh criticism and come out the other end as a better person, then I'd rather we not waste time trying to be over-inclusive.

Re: Why the hostility?
When it comes to being hostile towards noobs, it's basically this:
Modders like duh or grif or numgun, zalo, whitty, whatever, they are busy with their own lives, their own mods, perhaps some collaborated mods and such. They still take time out of their lives to help other less experienced and educated modders with their mods. If I were them, I would find it a large waste of time to come on here and answer a question that someone could easily, easily answer themselves if they would apply a little logic.
For crying out loud, 95% of the time CC tells you where it has an issue at. One can learn so much just by examining and copying code from .inis. I am a complete and utter newcomer to Lua code, but I have managed to make a scene that replaces a dummy controller with a toughened custom actor that I've made that needs to be defeated to win the mission. I learned how to give him a gun that can't be destroyed simply by observation and trial-and-error style debugging in the .inis.
Basically, if you just use a little bit of intelligence, you will most likely not get flamed. Do everything you possibly can to fix your mod and ask the forum as a last resort, because the modders have far more important matters to tend to than telling a noob that they need to tab their IncludeFile command in their mod's Index.ini.

Re: Why the hostility?
Why is everyone ganging up on Miles? He was saying that a good moderator is a Lurker. It doesn't matter if they post a lot. Just read the first few sentences, guys.
(Not to mention James, Alenth, TLB, and other people do not post very often, but they are going great. Do you ever see Skiv or Seraph post except when a thread is locked?)
