You shoot a zombie in the head, the zombie dies.
The army has a ♥♥♥♥ of guns so the zeds wouldn't even be able to get close, and if they do then bite-proof armour and gas masks are vastly easier to manufacture than bullet-proof ones. Just wrap some plastic around your arms and you're fine.
If they are literally the living dead, well there's a reason dead people don't walk around very much. They'd first turn stiff and unwieldy before doing the opposite and becoming rotten, slimy and bloated, neither of which state is efficient for movement or threatening anyway.
If they were infected people, they still wouldn't be as effective as healthy people because they'd be dying of some kind of disease. Eating only rotten human flesh is bad for you, and unless they ate eachother most of them would starve within a couple of days anyway.

Zombies in real life would never be a threat.
Microorganisms and parasites are ♥♥♥♥ resourceful, you've got millions of the buggers living in your right now and some of them are bits of your own DNA. If there was any benefit to turning people into murderkillmachines it would already be something that happened, but it's not because a parasite that gets its host killed is a dead parasite.

They're not "mutants" because mutant would imply genetic defects. They've essentially got a badass form of rabies. You could call them "infected" or "diseased," but I don't think "mutants" really cuts it.

And sure, not TECHNICALLY zombies, but "real" zombies (ie people who die and then come back to life as flesh-eating maniacs) are not really possible.

There's a difference between zombie virus and rabies.
Notice how rabid dogs don't come back to life or rot.

If you look at it like a species yeah, its unsustainable. However as Max Brooks has described it zombies are a virus, not a predator. A predator knows when to stop. A virus will keep consuming even when it results in its own annihilation.
