It's legal to make a back-up copy of media for your own personal use, which is what I've done. That, and I would simply have moved them from my desktop if I felt any kind of aprehension about them. Your ethically right, but legally wrong, because if you disabled any DRM in the process and are in the US, it would fall under the DMCA(digital millenium copyright act). Whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright.

A.) No drm was disabled B.) Being a resident of Canada, it's not likely that the U.S. will reach into my country to enforce it's laws on me. EDIT: I just noticed you touched on the point that it is a US law, so any underlying scorn can be safely disregarded C.) I'm pretty sure that the law says, or atleast a law FAQ website reads "4) Is it allowed to circumvent a copy-protection mechanism in order to make a back-up copy of a computer programme? Yes, it is allowed if you can do it yourself or know someone who can. The ban against breaking copy-protection mechanisms does namely not include computer programmes, but it is illegal to sell or for commercial purpose possess means, whose only purpose is to ease removal or circumvention of technical mechanisms which are used to protect a computer programme."

Re: Post Your Desktop II (watch out 56k-ers!)
If I had a larger resolution screen, I'd have some programs constantly open too. Now my taskbar just gets too cluttered, and there's not enough room on my desktop. Also, new wallpaper, not taking a pic because it has the same shortcuts etc, and it looks just stretched and ugly on my 4:3 monitor. So here's the noncrappy version.
