The general panic is likely because it's OMFGBBQ NEO, if we give everyone a couple of decades to accept it, it'll become as commonplace as normal flu. By which I mean: no one will give a rat's ass anymore. Wait, aren't rat asses expensive?

Re: EVERYBODY PANIC: Two dogs in Beijing have H1N1
I'm fairly certain that it is more deadly than the regular flu, in that a person with H1N1 has more of a chance of dying than a person with the seasonal flu. Also, it has spread pretty darn fast and does deserve the label of pandemic.
I'm not worried in the least, though. I've known a few people on campus that got it and they were out for a few weeks. I got a free vaccination, so that's the end of that.
No, it isn't terribly serious on a personal level. It's not even terribly serious on a global level; just notable.

Everyone shouldnt fear pet disease. Everyone should be aware there are mutations of H1N1 which the vaccine CANNOT prevent. One recently was reported in the southern hemisphere, (thank god) called H3N2.

Fearful_Ferret wrote: I'm fairly certain that it is more deadly than the regular flu, in that a person with H1N1 has more of a chance of dying than a person with the seasonal flu. Wrong! The only reason that statistic is cited is because everyone got innoculated last year with the non-h1n1 vaccine, which means the statement is actually more along the lines of : " If you regularly get your flu vaccination and laugh in the face of nature because you never get the flu, LOOK OUT: Odds of getting the flu this year are higher than normal because we didn't preemptively innoculate you for H1N1 because we guessed wrong at what will outbreak. WOOPS" Fox news translates that as "H1N1 is more likely to kill you" because you are not as likely to be vaccinated against it. If you get two people who are identical in every way, never got any flu shots, and one has H1N1 and one has regular ol' flu, the regular ol' flu dude is more at risk. If you have a history of health problems concerning your lungs (asthmatic for example), H1N1 is in a family of influenza that has a bit more lung-impact that most other flus (but not all other flus) so you might be at about equal risk of health complications at that point. If you have a weakened immune system you are probably gunna come close to death, via pneumonia, with either virus without treatment.
