This is another thing that we hate people for You mean newbs asking the same question over and over again? Kinda true - still - do you really think that you can actually achieve anything by flaming? Even if that one kid got the message - the others yet to come didnt. Of course thats no excuse but you see, there are others that might just grow to get used to repeat by flame even if the search werent much of use. The Search-function just doesnt help on every term...

I suggest you to do the same when you will see someone drop litter on street, you'll just get punched or in extreme situation stabbed with knife, but hey maybe this is the ultimate way to deal with thugs and impolite people in your neighbourhood! Just go out there and insult them as much as your imagination allows you. This surely will help them to become better! So you feel like a better man now or not enough heat? This post does not make sense. You're comparing the DRL thugs to -- random people on the streets? And random people on DRL to thugs on the street. I do not think this means what you think it means.

Re: Why the hostility?
If I may say one positive thing, which I think this topic has illustrated quite well, I at least like that you are all candid and brutally honest.
So...were there many of you (modders) that had a general idea of what you were doing with CC from the start? Or did you also go through the trial and error? And are there any of you now that have become fairly successful after being forged under the intense flames and pressure of these forums?
To be honest, and because I think it relates very much to my initial question, I'm more interested in the history of the CC community than [the history of] CC itself.

I do not think this means what you think it means. Actually it makes, you just fail to notice it or don't want to. But no worries I'll ABC it to you. Comparsion is irrevelant because frankly people on DRL board won't stab you with knife when you insult them. What is important here is method applied to solve problems - insulting/flaming. Situation I described had one purpose: to show how stupid this method is. Thugs, people dropping litter on street, whatever. I could describe situation in which teacher wants to "encourage" his student to work harder. It doesn't matter and you just missed the point.

Re: Why the hostility?
The hostility, I have to agree with THOR on this one, is a method for the forum veterans to self moderate the boards. We commonly joke with each other about how elitist and we're such pricks to the new people, but at the root of it, THERE IS A BENEFIT, AND IT'S WHY WE DO IT. I've seen and heard every excuse to tolerate stupid new people. "They'll change!", "They just need to lurk more.", etc. They won't. If they were intelligent to lurk enough to get the general idea and scope of the forums before posting, they're a keeper. If they're posting an introduction thread in mod releases that doesn't consist of a lot more then Quote: omghia u gyz dis game l00kz 0f da h00k n im a ♥♥♥ fr0m dis othr for0m n ken sum1 be me dis game my prnts wont bye me it i h4te my prnts We can and will destroy them with our replies. We don't want them here, you don't want them here, and if you don't think you can handle a forum where the userbase is largely offensive towards newcomers, you can always leave or start your own "Good" forum based on DRL, and see what happens when you invite all the unwanted from here to there. Those always turn out great.

Honestly we're not that hostile. Though we tend to pro-actively correct, I've rarely seen the insults go much beyond the original topic of the disgression.

Re: Why the hostility?
@ Dauss I have no delusions that trolls will change when you will appeal to their "good heart" but flaming won't really solve situation either, sure you'll scare away good deal of people but trolls (which are the ones you really want to get rid off, not people who just don't know how to use search function) will have more reasons to troll. With such people mods should deal quickly and quietly, delete thread, eventualy ban or warn user, other users should just stay away and ignore whole situation. When someone robbs bank do you call police or try to stop thieves? I call police.

I sympathise with those people who think there is another way. I used to be one of you. I became a staff member and implemented changes to stop us from becoming like DRLFF.
It was a mistake. This way is better.

Way to go... @ metal chao So on this forum you are talking about you made changes so forum is moderated by moderators and not users and that didn't work? Maybe you were understaffed? Otherwise I don't see what could go wrong. Moderator who can delete threads, ban users and do all kinds of stuff vs. user who can do one thing - flame Hmm.... tough choice isn't it?

If they're too dumb to understand how the search function works, then yes.

Re: Why the hostility?
Okay, persuaded. Sometimes there are those dumbheads that need a little spank. In the end the discussion as it is now is pointless as everyone with a sane mind finally would have to agree that actually thinking has to be preferred about flaming. I think - all in all thats mine and janekks point and nothing else.
But the real problem this topic should be aimed for is stuff like "If you dont like CC, gtfo". True - someone only bitching without trying to give some proper reasons why or how to possibly solve that should just get out of here - thing is - certain people already heat up their Flamethrowers whenever someone dares to say that the physics arent perfect and could eventually maybe need some further tweaking.
That is certainly not in any way of help to anyone. Bananas!

Yeah the things we do affect the entire community, for instance some people may like the fact that I've banned Flammablezombie for posting like a raging idiot, but some people may see that as blatant abuse of my powers as I was ridiculously drunk at the time. Then somewhere down the line you have people generally hating the moderators, which leads to yet more flaming. Forums find their own natural equilibrium, and I've found that over the past few years this kind of aggresive response is our natural balance; rocking the boat only makes the other passengers throw you off.

Re: Why the hostility?
You all have and should've noticed the increase in retards on these forums since CC won two awards at the IGF. Well now they're all being idiots and trying to post in every single thread on these forums, when they were supposed to lurk around.
In mod releases an average post is: "OMG UR M0D IS S00 C0000000l!!111one" and "War dosed teh m0ded go?????????? ", and think that putting 10 question marks will give them a "better answer", instead we flame them for being stupid, which I don't really care about since they deserve it anyway. Grif can do whatever he wants, because if he gets banned for a 2 days the forums will fall apart and become a heap of garbage. (Almost whatever he wants atleast.)
