Well, this modern archery crap is for target shooting.
He doesn't unduly disparage it, as he says during a live interview, it's just less active, probably less viable for combat/military, and personally less fun.

Depends on the military you're talking about.

Some nations had their archers in huge groups firing heavy bows to rain down a storm of arrows, bows that would be way too heavy to rapid-fire. Others had them on horseback with lighter bows, where rapid fire on an individual archer would be more useful since you're not an artillery unit.

You rang?

Personally, I'm more of a fan of crossbows than I am of regular bows. Easier to use and you can pretty much train a raw recruit in their use in around a week since they're simple weapons to use. Bows, on the otherhand, especially the English Longbow, required lots of training to be any good at it, so you ended up with the creation of things like yeomanry, with people having to practice from childhood to get any good with it.

Even then, they weren't the spectacular killing machines that fiction likes to paint them as.

I'd rather have a good steel cranequin than a longbow, mostly because I'm not a bowman :p

Oh, and because mixed crossbowmen and pikemen had already started to put an end to the dominance of mounted heavy cavalry in the late medieval.

Anyway, I've been thinking of getting a Wessex flag, maybe a Harald Godwinson one.

Because...

Why not? :p

We English are the sons of the white dragon, after all.

The vibe I got from the linked video was definitely disparaging of modern archery, what with all of it's references to modern archery as having been developed from movies etc. If the guy personally doesn't actually ascribe to that belief, well, that's an entirely different matter, I only have this video to go off of.
If modern archery evolved to do better in target shooting, well there's your reason why it is what it is, not because we forgot all the other techniques.
As far as it being less viable for military applications... well yeah, we have guns.

But Duh, bows are totally viable in modern warfare! You can like, reuse the ammo, and it's silent!

On another note, fast shooting of a not-bow:

I'm a semi-auto guy personally.

No burst fire please unless it's a two shot.

I'd love to own a revolver myself, but ammunition's pretty expensive if you're not planning on reloading cartridges. I think 357 magnum prices here are close to 50 cents per shot.
