No I think your phrasing was perfectly clear and I haven't a clue as to how one could interpret a section of the armed forces to be mercenaries.

USAF as an independent branch didn't start until post-WWII but the Army Air Corps had plenty of badarses, like the Tuskegee Airmen as an example.
