Re: Should this run CC without lag?
This mirror is very dirty; I think we need some "polish". Being able to eat off of it would be wonderful as well, or, at least, without the fear of some deadly, obscure disease.
I have a hunch the slowdown made when recording CC with PrintScrn could be lowered if Data tried, I have trouble doing anything when recording. Or when exploding too many bombs sometimes the game can come to a standstill for over 20 seconds. So many things that, if fixed, would make playing the game much more enjoyable.
But now then, this is a little off topic...

Re: Should this run CC without lag?
huge amounts of particles flying make their job done. I got an ability to use such a system to install CC on it: core 2 quad 2.8 Ghz 4 gb ram 8800 GTX * 2 = SLI mode (as I can understand, for CC video card doesn't matter almost at all)
At home I have Core 2 Duo 1.86 Ghz 2 GB Ram 8600 GT
Result: Almost no difference. When I dropped Zero-division bomb (verrry laggy thingy, creates almost 32k own particles + flying stuff = ~100k! - I'm not joking! Hueg Pack'o'modz, exactly Hueg, not Huge)
1 PCs performance lowered to 9-12 fps 2 PCs perf dropped to 8-9
Difference between systems is significant. Crysis show over 50 fps on first machine with any settings on big 26" displays which shows up to 1920*1440 image. I know that Crysis is a video card killer.
But processors are required too. Why in CC I had such a little difference?

Re: Should this run CC without lag?
RAM and the CPU are the only things that matter when running CC. The graphics card isn't used at all, so even if you have that several tens of thousands of dollars external graphics card from Nvidia, It wouldn't help. And CC can only use 1 core on a CPU right now, so anything with multiple cores isn't using at least half of its potential. As to why they are so close, timescale also comes into effect, not just FPS.
Tl;dr: Cortex Command is very finicky.

I'm pretty sure every graphics card since 1998 has been able to display 640x480 pixels

weasel wrote: ProjektTHOR wrote: tl;dr data is a bad programmer. Hey now, that's not very nice but it's true. let me demonstrate. There's a lot of very expensive-on-the-cpu maths that have to be done every tick for all them particles to fly around properly. Graphics cards exist for this very reason. There's probably some optimization both on the code end and perhaps even on the mathematics end of things. Not to mention CPU/GPU offloading. It's common to leave those things until late development because they are: a) boring to code, he is selling the game. It needs to be playable.b) not necessary to code immediately (it has no dependencies) and c) doesn't provide a valuable feature. Being playable is actually quite a good feature, you will find. It's a "polish" thing. Then 'polish' it.Seriously, I can't believe he is charging for this game.

Re: Should this run CC without lag?
It IS playable in it's current state. I don't notice any lag and I play on a cheap laptop without a video card or dual cores or whatever. Considering the game has won awards and has this many people modding and playing it, plus considering that Data is making a living off of it's sales, I'm going to go ahead and think that the performance is 'good enough' right now.
Good enough to make sales and a lot of happy customers.
I'm not saying that it won't ever get optimized or sped up, but it's not going to be anytime soon because most people aren't affected and don't care.
As for polish - you don't polish something that's half done. It's like putting chrome on the frame of your car. It's pointless and just wastes time and money.

Re: Should this run CC without lag?
OH MAN GOOD JOB HKULTRA YOU POINTED OUT THAT MODS CAN CAUSE ADVERSE AFFECTS TO GAMEPLAY
spoilers: non-official content cannot be relied upon for stable quality
no one in the history of ever has promised completely working mod content because that's not something you can promise
