Re: Why the hostility?
Well, I've spent the last three and a half years (to the day) on these forums. The first many months, I modded and ignored any bad comments thrown my way, though to be honest, I don't remember too many such comments, but then you were held to a much lower standard back then and my mods tended to be more tech demos of what Data was going to implement the next day anyway (impact gibbing!). After growing bored of modding, I started lurking around Off-Topic/General Discussion and Mature Discussion for a while, to the point where well over half my posts have been deleted, what with the demise of the latter board (twice over) and the forum wipes.
During that time, I've seen some perfectly nice people getting yelled down for doing something subpar or just changing minor things and calling it a mod. It's a tougher learning curve here than I think it could be, but I'll admit, I think the overall quality of these forums may well be better for it. And I may not go to many other forums, but I'd wager that the literacy rate here is probably comparable to Canada. And that, my friends, is impressive.

Well, I have seen a few people getting raped for nothing. But fortunately this doesn't happen all that often. I was actually one of the idiots that got verbally raped, but I like to think of it as a good thing. Because of that I try to put as much effort into my spelling and posts as I can and it has actually shaped me into a better community member IMO

Everyone who gets flamed consistently either A: leaves or B: shapes up. As long as we flame people for good reasons the system will always work.

Some people, on the other hand, continue with their annoying-ness/stupidity despite the fact of them getting flamed heavily. Those people just can't learn.

We are all rude and obnoxious because most of the moderators don't know how to moderate.
As such, we moderate the board indirectly by being rude, crude, and dispensing some tough love to noobs so as to communicate the way things work here to them.
If you can't handle a little bit of heat, stay out of the kitchen?

Re: Why the hostility?
I wholeheartedly agree with the general feel of the answers here - use common sense when you join - I lurked for a while before I even bothered to register, and legitimate questions are always answered with intelligent responses.
The problem is you get people who have the attention span and patience of a dog on crack, who expect everything to be dropped into their lap - That one line you forgot to tab or those offsets are going to take a while to fix matey, learn to live with it or spot your mistakes faster! Too many people can't be bothered to find their own fix to things, or decide to release half-baked mods and think it's acceptable - in CC it just looks plain ♥♥♥♥ if it's not pulled off well.
And we don't like people who do that.

I mostly agree - yet - sometimes, it is not the newb who acts like an Idiot. I can tell.

Re: Why the hostility?
I've been lurking since early 07, but I didn't register until next year. Most of my posts are small, just quick comments. Since I'm usually trying to do something else or don't feel like it all together.

I agree... this board is way too mean to people who are usually trying their hardest to learn

Those people just can't learn. 3rd option: they are fed up with getting flamed and just reply with same. Honestly what do you really expect to achive by insulting people? I suggest you to do the same when you will see someone drop litter on street, you'll just get punched or in extreme situation stabbed with knife, but hey maybe this is the ultimate way to deal with thugs and impolite people in your neighbourhood! Just go out there and insult them as much as your imagination allows you. This surely will help them to become better! So you feel like a better man now or not enough heat?
