I'm sure if you compared conditions right now in Africa to conditions six thousand years ago, today would still come out on top. It's not the introduction of the global system that introduced "poverty", it's moreso that Africa can't seem to keep pace with the rest of the civilized world.

 Re: The Lounge
In some respects, Africans of 6,000 years ago were better off than most North Americans. If you consider smart phones and fast cars to be what constitutes living well then probably not- but if you consider happiness, relationships, and having leisure time for art, friends and family to be living well then they beat us by a mile. And they were most certainly better off than the vast majority of the world (including Africans) today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_affluent_society

Dell Dimensions are so dull. I spray painted one of my dad's gold and put the end of a .45 casing as the power button: Nothing special, but I'm proud cause I suck at making physical things.

Yet another issue with aiding third world countries. This is a fairly ethnocentric view which while it might not be strictly incorrect really obfuscates the issue. Developing nations are in such dire straits largely due to white people's attempts to force their technology and modern ways on them. For the hundreds of thousands of years everyone was doing pretty good, it's only after the introduction of the global system that we see widespread poverty. There are a lot of problems, I was pointing out one. If they had the population they had 6k years ago, I'm sure they would be ok with their old farming and water collecting practices, but they have a vastly increased population that needs the increased production density that modern infrastructure provides to live at a baseline level. Arable land over there is also shrinking due to deforestation and agriculture, so it's becoming more difficult to use old farming and water collecting practices.

Besides, newer generations of GM plants are getting varied immunities/resistances, a common issue is to not rotate the method or pesticide they use, and it ends up with overly resistant pests.
