In completely different news, i feel the compulsion to say "aw yeah ♥♥♥♥♥es i beat Descent 1 today" because i did. That ♥♥♥♥'s hardcore, and i was playing on the second out of five difficulties.
spoiler because many of you might not care about me rambling about the difficulty of Descent
The first few enemies have painfully slow lasers that hit for like 3 damage each, along with a rocket-shooting mook that deals 12 damage on a direct hit. Those guys are pretty easy to deal with, since you can fly twice as fast as their shots. Then there's a tougher edition of that rocket-shooter that can take a shitload of damage and shoots HOMING rockets, which are impossible to outrun and fairly difficult to dodge around (so you better hope there's a corner nearby). Oh, and did i mention all those rockets have an unreasonably large splash radius? Because they do. It's not impossible to survive though, since in open areas, you can zip past the rockets so fast that they can't turn quickly enough, making them lose track of you.
But then, THEN comes a foe with a hitscan(!!!) vulcan cannon, which will typically tag you for 15-20 damage if it catches you off guard, which it does 90% of the time, typically when you open a door or round a corner. In open areas, it IS possible to dodge by merit of them having a slow turning rate, but if you don't move constantly, it's going to hurt. Later on, these come in a cloaked and slightly tougher variant, which hit just as hard. The first encounter with these is a large room with approximately 6-8 of these foes AT ONCE, so basically you die half a second after entering. This room alone killed me 5 times. The first boss killed me once or twice, while the final boss didn't kill me at all. What the ♥♥♥♥, Parallax?
Most other foes are reasonably fair, except for two additional ones: A standard mook that shoots bursts of 3 dumbfire rockets with little delay between bursts (which is a lot of splash damage), which in and of itself isn't THAT bad, but if you round a corner and see this guy, you WILL eat 3 rockets, which takes off a godawful amount of shield (and in the later levels, you RARELY have full shield).
Finally, there's a big purple bugger that shoots fast purple energy blasts at you, in straight lines. Not homing makes it easy, you say? Well sure, if you discount the shots' gigantic hitbox, high speed and INSANE power. Insane as in "takes off 80 shields in one shot". I'm not even kidding, they do 80 damage on the second easiest difficulty. Better have your dodging skills maxed out by then!
So let me sum up the damage per shot you can expect in Descent over the course of the game: 3 -> 3x2 -> 12 -> 3x7 (hitscan) -> 6x2 -> 12x3 -> 80
And they say Descent 2 is actually harder than Descent 1. :U
wargh wargh merry christmas!!

Re: The Lounge
Descent is a fantastic multiplayer game, we should get a game going at some point. Could be fun.

No they are
It is literally their job to listen to your self absorbed idle chatter
That is what therapists do for a living

I'd rather have a bro who would actually listen and be confused just as I am rather than a guy who acts like he/she knows what others go through and can relate it with myself, filling my head with falsified opinions and pussy depression pills.

Therapists don't prescribe drugs, you are thinking of Psychiatrists Therapists don't do anything except listen to you and occasionally ask questions or have a conversation
As mental professionals their opinion on your mental health is also far less likely to be falsified than your own

Re: The Lounge
Dad woke me up at 6am in the morning, crying about how my mom could be cheating on him.
I have 4 hours after this post to figure out something to keep them together, or my father is going to tell her to get a lie detector test and if she refuses, he leaves.
Well tell him that's ♥♥♥♥ stupid since lie detector tests are awful. I know that you murricans consider them to be good evidence in a lot of states, but polygraphs measure arousal and not truth.

Does anyone actually have consistent evidence of Lie detectors working? From What I know it's basically If the person doesn't drown they're a witch BURNTHEMBURNTHEMBURNTHEMBURNTHEM

Re: The Lounge
There is very little evidence in support of the validity of Polygraph tests As the machine itself does not (and cannot) measure "deception" the results need to be interpreted by a human in comparison to charts of expected norms and thus can easily be cheated by both the questioner and the accused These factors being measured are not even all conclusively linked to lying, which often has different physiological tells depending on the individual tested
The questions asked, who is asking them and who is being asked are just as important as the condition of the machine if not more so, which brings into question why you even need a machine in the room at all

You know why lie detectors aren't use when someone is going to talk about a crime to a judge or something? Because they don't work.

Re: The Lounge
When used properly they have accuracy ratings of between 70 and 90 percent, but the "used properly" part is the hard part. They're also susceptible to countermeasures, if you know what you're doing. source
I have definitely not heard percentages that high myself, but regardless are you really comfortable with having a 30% chance that your dad will think your mom is cheating on him? Even 10% is stupidly high for important ♥♥♥♥ like this. Also as Duh said there is human error in application as well.
If you decide to use it don't do the relevant/irrelevant question test generally favoured by North Americans, make sure they use the guilty knowledge technique instead.

Re: The Lounge
I don't think the point is the accuracy, his dad is likely not thinking very logically about this. If he's even truly thinking about a lie detector test, he probably is convinced she IS lying but just wants proof.
