Post Looking for a good spriter with some spare time...
Hey guys, Me and a couple of buddies are working on making an RPG in classic 16 bit style, the problem is none of us are any good at spriting, coding is fine, but we can't make a decent looking character for our lives, so anyone feel like helping? The game is going to be steampunk themed, about a flying city, and the dark secret it has begun to contain. If anyone's interested, I have some ideas as to what we need.

If you don't have any art assets and you're probably just a bunch of bros hanging out thinking you're going to be the next indie sensation I fail to see why anyone should be motivated to help you.

Make stickmen and placeholder sprites. It makes it so you can't procrastinate and say "well, we don't have spriters yet, I guess we'll wait until we get some...".
When you have working (badly sprited) demos, people are much more likely to hop on than just an idea.

I might help when the above happens.
Depends on how many sprites we're talking about here.

MLC, if they are talking about a full game it's not going to be a small number
Of course it is most likely that they aren't going to make any game and will need no sprites at all

This is such a stupid argument. I expect better from you Grif. You're supposed to yell at artists looking for coders, not the other way around. They've got more than just a concept, and by the way he's talking, they've probably got some sort of working model just with placeholder sprites. hurr durr you don't possess all of the skills to make a game on your own? what a failure get out.

There's a big difference between 50 and 100 sprites.

We're not talking about 50 and 100
If they end up not making a game they will need 0 sprites
If they actually make a game they will need 1000+ sprites

Depends on length, etc, etc.

I really doubt that this game, even if it is an RPG (which are normally full of crazy animation) would have 1000+ sprites.

If it's going to be anywhere near the length you want to play an RPG for (at least 20 hours I'd say) then you would need at least 1000 sprites.
First you'd need all the enemies, which I'd put in at about 200
Let's say 50 NPCs as well, but they all need movement animations in at least four directions, which meant 12 sprites per NPC, that's 600 more sprites.
Then you need the battle animation sprites, you're going to need at least 400 frames of those because they need to look fancy.
Then there's all the item graphics, one per item so maybe 100, and all the character portraits (maybe front and back), so maybe 20 or so for that, and the menu graphics.

Which makes easily over 1000 sprites.

I'd say 100+ unique enemy sprites, plus lots of recolors.

50 enemies, not including bosses. Have you ever played a 20 hour long RPG? I have. You dont encounter 10 brand spanking new enemies every hour of the game, sorry.
20 npcs sounds right to me, depending on how many types of towns there are, you know, desert, etc. So I'd say 10 per. thats 200 sprites. Thats generous, it also depends on how long character's legs are in the game. This person said 16 bit, so i'd say more like 8 frames, or 160.
I'd need 15 per monster generally, (but that's being generous, counting ones that have magic,) so 750, then with the main character(s) spites, thats about 850.
Then you have different animations for the main character(s), so you have another 100 right there.
100 items? No way man. More like, I don't know, 50? Including quest items!
For portraits, I love them, so I'll give them 200. For NPCs, emotions, etc. But, without that, yeah, more like 20.
maybe 100 menu graphics, including the text bar area.

So, 1340
Or, being very, very generous, 1600.
But thats all being very generous in the first place.
It probably isn't even 20 hours.
What about 10 hours? Let's halve the numbers.
670, or 800.
I'd love to do that if I were being paid though, but...
We need a demo.

I recommend going to http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation ... board=14.0

That is the home to many a great spriter, and they take job offers!
SERIOUSLY!
Not to mention that they have an unpaid work section that you could post in.
