when installing java...
I get this error: error 1606.could not access network location \\Elwick\Users\Student\studente\. my computer is Windows 98 (Yes I know it is old, I can't afford any thing better)

Sounds like you're trying to install Java on a school computer. Buy a new school.

Assuming that this actually is yours, to keep, at home, then I dunno. Those school people do all sorts of crap. I recommend you nuke and pave. If you are installing it at school, then I chide you for thinking anything decent will run on a Windows 98 School Computer.
