Re: Home server OS question
Just because I forgot what word to use, 'distro', doesn't mean I'm talking out of my ass. I admit I do not have a lot of experience with Linux but I am trying to help by asking questions to get more information for the people who do know what they're doing. You don't have to insult me.
Duh should probably go to a support forum to fix his problem, like THOR said.
As for what distro, my brother, a Linux enthusiast, recommended Ubuntu when I asked about it. He also said he uses Gentoo but that it isn't for everybody.

I never insulted you. Who the ♥♥♥♥ is insulted because someone points out that they're not omniscient? Also Ubuntu is silly and you should just do what Daman did and do a trial-by-fire via ArchLinux.

Re: Home server OS question
Arch is one of those distros that stands out by having a non-standard (read: minimalist) design philosophy. Consider archlinux a lot of fun if you want to deal with a lot of dependencies. Not saying that is a negative. That's actually a positive, if a minimal installation is what you are looking for.
The only issue is: Don't go to a distro like that and seek out help from the community. If you want something more user-friendly in the support arena, try Fedora or Ubuntu, end of story.

Re: Home server OS question
Yeah, looking at Gentoo and Archlinux... I can't make heads nor tails of it. I'll probably stick with the Ubuntu family, mainly because I've managed to get it to work @CrazyMLC: I fixed the problem by reinstalling the OS. It decided to work this time without going crazy.

Re: Home server OS question
As thor said above, but for you I'd probably but more emphasis on the fedora half of "fedora or ubuntu". I've more experience with ubuntu, but the forums are generally hell to pick through if you're having specific issues (unless that's cleared up recently). That and fedora's development pace is pretty insane recently, but i suppose if you're more comfortable with ubuntu go for it. Arch is a wonderful thing, but if you're currently having a bit of trouble getting nix up and running you're probably going to want a more noob-friendly distro.
