What is a simple, easy-to-use program for partitioning?

Vista has one built in.

Plus it's the only partitioning program for Vista that doesn't cause Vista to die.

If you want one for XP/Intel Mac/*nix, GParted is good but does not work in Windows(not sure about Mac OS X, either).

You know how to burn a bootable CD, right?

The one for Vista will only let me make a partition 3.5GB big.


And I know how to make a CD/DVD, but I don't have the4 proper drives to burn them.

And yes, you will have to do it the hard way. None of the regular tools work in Vista.

Are you mad? What does that have to do with partitioning a drive? Further evidence that mail2345 is retarded.

There are plenty of softwares out on the intertubes that can partition a drive in place (although with risk of data loss). Most of those same softwares will allow you to create some kind of bootable media (floppy, CD-ROM, USB Flash) so that you can defragment a drive while it is not in use.

Alternatively, if you have a second hard drive, you can install Windows (or I suggest a micro Linux distribution) and then partition the old drive via the new operating system.

Page file fragments it self all the way to near the end of the drive.

It's not safe to move the page file while windows is running.

And ProjectTHOR, try Google any combination of winload.exe Vista partitioning and you get forums of user whining about how Vista broke after partitioning, and a few fixes involving the recovery disk which do not necessary work 100% of the time.

Too bad that doesn't answer his question of "how do i partition my drive."

Yes it does.

If the page file is sitting nicely in the front of the partition when the partition is shrunk, Vista doesn't have anything in it's way preventing it from shrinking using the built in tools.

That still doesn't tell him how to do it.

Fine, a step by step.

Prep:
Please backup all your files and remove unnecessary startup process before continuing
Also make sure you have enough physical RAM to run all critical apps and a defragmenter and a browser.
1. Goto Control Panel - System.
2. Click on the side advanced system settings.
3. Click on the settings for visual effects, processor scheduling,virtual memory, ect.
4. Click on the advance tab.
5. Click on change.
6. Click no paging file.
7. Click set.
8. If more than one drive has a paging file that you wish to partition, click on it's name and do steps 6-7 again.
9. Reboot
10. On boot, defragment.
11. After full defragment(eg, moving files to the front of the hard drive) redo steps 1 - 5 untill you are at the virtual memory control window.
12. Click on custom size(only if you wish to keep a paging file).
13. Enter in a value for both initial size and maximum size that is equal to 1.5 to 2 times the size of your physical RAM.
14. For each drive you wish to restore the paging file to, click on it's name and do 12-13 again.
15. Reboot.
16. Now you have a defragemented paging file.

Part 2:

1. Start -> Right click computer and click manage.
2. Click on disk management.
3. Done.

Also if you can't make a bootable disk but need one for XP, PowerQuest PartitionMagic.

There you go. Took you long enough.
