Major virus attack, need help with cleanup/repair.
Ive cleaned out the virus but it left a mess. Problems are; Windows live search engine and google link to popups, ask search engine is simply blocked. Desktop background is plain blue, and I can no longer change it. "Desktop" tab is missing from the desktop properties menu. Avast cannot start due to permissions (I need to reinstall, I know that) And alot of other issues that im finding every day. Anyone know fixes to any of these? Oh and the virus/adware uninstalled my IE7 pro AdBlocker (Lol, they want me to see the ads )

If your ♥♥♥♥ is that ♥♥♥♥, you're better off reformatting than fixing all of that. You'd end up worse off than before.
Make backups of everything you need and do a clean installation of windows.
And make sure not to get backups of the viruses.

Hosts file, find the entry for windows live and google, delete 'em. Hell you could probably delete everything in there except for the ♥♥♥♥ with the # before it. I know adblocking programs place entries in there but default windows doesn't.

Something like this should be done manually, not with a program.

So it's a useless program that gives you a shiny press button receive stupidity GUI that allows you to do exactly the same thing doing it manually would do without the assurance that it's only doing what you tell it to do. Do it manually.

all it really does is list things brought up on startup through each of windows' various methods and let you look for suspicious things I would also recommend autoruns and process explorer, they do similar stuff but it's all manual really

Well from what cambiogris said, it's exactly what I said. It gives you a GUI for ♥♥♥♥ you can do manually easy.

I really don't see why having multiple (a lot more than shown here) regedit and explorer windows is easier than having it in one place HijackThis! isn't some magic fixing tool, it just lists ♥♥♥♥

I don't trust anything with my registry. Stupid programmers try to help and then ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ up.

Re: Major virus attack, need help with cleanup/repair.
Dont want to do a reformat... Ive done alot of stuff with the registry, and im sure some of my fixes (the background one) are registry things. With the host file, I dont get as much as you. I get 5 files; hosts, networks, services, lmhosts, and protocol

I've added files, and that's a folder ♥♥♥♥, not a file. Open hosts with notepad.
