Re: Lucidity (A Text Based Interactive ForumAdventure of Yore)
Somewhat reminds me of Half-Life, what with all the man in suit adjusting his tie and the cake (a lie, of course) and being pulled through a tunnel, reminiscent of the train at the end of HL/beginning of HL2.
Carry on, anyway. And don't believe them if they mention cake.

Re: Lucidity (A Text Based Interactive ForumAdventure of Yore)
Quote: Ask where you are, watch out for Grue/CP's/GMAN. "Where am I?" you manage to mumble. Woman: "Oh God, he has amnesia! I told you not to use the knockout gas!" *mumbling* You decide to be wary of anything that resembles a Grue, CP or Gman. Quote: Open your eyes, if they aren't already.
Then, seeing as I assume you don't know what all that delta level brainwaves ♥♥♥♥ is all about, say you have amnesia and have forgotten what the experiment was.
You open your eyes, the brightness of florescent lighting temporarily blinding you, but eventually turning into the shape of a woman with glasses on, brown hair, a headset, a white lab coat, and a hand which is furiously scribbling on a clipboard. You also notice two metal rods very near your head, seeming to curve backwards around your cranium. "He's awake!" she exclaims, happiness briefly flashing across her face before returning to dogged concentration on the clipboard, her writing hand moving ten times as fast with this knowledge. "Please, tell me your name." she says, whilst staring at the clipboard. "My name is Thomas." you force out, automatically. "And your current residence?" "451 Treebrook Street, Boston, New Massachusetts, Neo-America, area code 55204." The words come out of your mouth directly from memory. Whatever amnesia you have doesn't seem to be affecting your past memories. "What did you have for breakfast this morning?" "A coffee cake?" "And what year is it?" "2540, A.D." "And your psychologist's name is?" "Doctor Barnes. Look, can you give me some idea what is going on here, where the heck I am, and why you're interrogating me with such frivolous questions?" "He doesn't remember a thing about last night. This is not good. The amnesia should not be this serious." she says into the headset microphone. "Remember a thing about what?" you wonder. The surroundings are very unfamiliar. You turn your head to the left side to see a clean, white wall with a digital clock projected onto it. The time reads 7:46 AM. Must have been some night. Your first suspicions about the metal rods were correct: they seem to head into the back of the quite comfortable chair you're sitting in. "Look at me, hon." says the woman before you have time to take in anything else. You obey, and she says "Fire the alpha-beta pattern. He's still not fully stabilized." Your brain feels as though it is made of jelly for a few seconds and you feel a curious, tickling sensation on your scalp near the rods. You are suddenly very alert, the drowsiness of sleep disappearing completely, and your senses seem to be several times that of which they were previously. You notice the faint smell of perfume on the scientist and are able to hear the speech coming from the headset. Headset: "How about now?" Scientist: "Looks much better. Thanks Controller." Headset: "No problem." You can also taste a bitter chemical on almost every surface of your mouth. The tingling sensation stops and your brain re-solidifies. You slump back into the chair, feeling more drained than ever. You can no longer taste the chemical, smell the perfume, or understand the faint noise coming from the headset speaker. Slowly, you form the air in your dry mouth into words: "What is the delta program? What is the alpha-beta pattern? Where am I? What sort of experiment is this? And finally, have you induced amnesia on me?" The scientist seems to be paying no mind to you, answering with a quick, "Oh, nothing you need to worry about right now. Everything will be explained in a minute here after the results are reported." She is still scribbling on the clipboard, though at a position significantly lower than that of where you first saw her hands writing. Suddenly, she stops, focuses very hard on the clipboard, her stare seeming to suck every word off whatever is on that piece of wood. She reads the entire thing with the same, hard focus. Upon reaching the bottom, she stops, looks up, blinks, and her face turns into that of a smiling young woman's who looks upon a child who has just scraped his knee. "What is it that you want to know again, Thomas?" she says sweetly. You wonder where you could possibly be, what has happened to you since last morning, and why that dream seemed so real, more real than the dreams you had before you had left the comfort of your home that day. Quote: Carry on, anyway. And don't believe them if they mention cake. You decide that the cake is a lie, based on past experience and vague memories of a video game that you can't quite remember the name of. The only thing you can recall about it is its horrible graphics, but excellent story. You were surprised that you could find a suitable quanputer to run it on (all the current technologies ran it way too fast), buying a very old AMentium 5600 with a very obsolete optical drive to play around with the game on a strange piece of circular plastic and what appeared to be metal labeled - oh yes! - "Portal" while going through the time capsule one of your great ancestors left you from the year 2008.

Get an explanation of what's happening, since we have amnesia

Re: Lucidity (A Text Based Interactive ForumAdventure of Yore)
*EXIT STORY TELLING MODE* Sorry for the not updates guys. Been kinda busy lately. *RE-ENTER ATMOSPHERE*
"Erm... Tell me everything." you say, hoping to get the maximum amount of information out of her. "Well let's see... I suppose you remember your sessions with Doctor Barnes? Do you recall the topic of over 75% of your discussions with him?" she queries. "Yes, my recurring dreams about a door, an evil and an inability to open said door." you remember. "That is why you are here. As to where here is, that is highly classified information. You see, you are a part of Project MKALPHA, a top secret project to find the ultimate weapon: man's human body and mind. That story you told your psychologist is no mere random, illogical occurrence in the strange world of unconsciousness, it is a recurring tale, not only throughout your lifetime but throughout the time of man itself. You see, archeologists all over the world have uncovered many documents bearing stories which are too closely related to be a coincidence, and in so many forms of language, print, and writing medium that there is no way that one man could have fabricated them in one lifetime. It gets even stranger though: every single one of those documents has some form of your story in the vernacular of the times, with very little, and in some cases, no deviation between documents as far as the meaning and emotion of the words go. Of course, some people did not have a white, wooden door, as described by yourself, but the symbols expressed a very similar meaning: some sort of barrier that the author had to cross and found it extremely difficult or impossible to cross. And again we see that the authors fear some great evil, something that no man of the time could defeat. But what MKALPHA is interested in researching is what happens when you cross your barrier. If such a force could defeat an untouchable enemy, there is a possibility that we could harness this ability and put it into use in the military. That is why you are here. That is why we have been searching so long for a person who tells the story of an undefeatable evil, a barrier, and the destiny this person must fulfill." "Won't people get suspicious when I'm suddenly gone from all my college classes, not showing up at the date I had scheduled for tonight with my girlfriend, and not giving my dad a call to wish him a happy birthday tomorrow?" you say. "All taken care of. Every person you've been significantly involved with has been informed that you have died in a car crash and the relevant authorities have been instructed to tell any questioning people that there was no trace of a body and you just seemed to have disappeared." she says, quite confidently. "Wait, so you never intend on returning me to the surface world?" "Well, it works like this: if you prove useful and are able to use this hidden, potent ability that we believe humans have, you will return to the surface as a super-soldier and instructor for the rest of the human race. On the other hand, if you do not have such an ability, we cannot allow you to leave. Do not test us either, all personnel are trained in the art of combat and are authorized to use deadly force, if necessary, to incapacitate you. We have spent far too long on this project to have it be spoiled by loose lips. You will be comfortable here, we can assure you. We have all the modern conveniences: holovision, quanputers, sensual games, and a library which includes almost every book in the known universe. You cannot communicate with outsiders though, that is the only thing we ask of you. And you're not alone either, we have found 3 other potential candidates who have told the same story you have. Feel free to socialize with them." "What about all this stuff around me," you say, gesturing at the quanputers and metal rods in your chair, "And the alpha-beta and delta waves stuff? What's that all about?" "That was one of the successful fruits of MKALPHA. It has been in use in the military for enhancement and training during periods of inactivity and sleep. Electrical impulses within the human mind can be modified, very extensively in fact, and all one needs to do is send a series of electronic interference and radiation through these rods in this chair to modify almost everything that you perceive. That's right, mind control. The alpha-beta pattern is designed to enhance human sense several times beyond what most humans have, as I think you noticed when I saw you trying to get closer to me and smell the perfume I put on two weeks ago." she says, winking. "The military has been using it for years and it has made our soldiers like wolves: they have the ability to get full nightvision in 3 seconds, and in 3 minutes... the result is astonishing. Snipers have an average reaction time of 0.0001 milliseconds in tests administered by the army. Scouts are able to smell an enemy 500 feet away. The delta pattern is designed to bring you out of sleep. Brains are in a different state when they are sleeping, as you know. So the delta pattern initiates and catalyzes the "Wake Up!" function of the brain. Your brain was extremely active when I put in the order to initiate it. We were afraid you were going to have a seizure, or cardiac arrest." She points to a large section of peaks on a graph to the left of you, apparently which was tracking your brain activity. "But we aren't interested in taking over the world... we have also invented a device that interprets the brainwaves of humans and any other beings that use a brain which utilizes electricity to convey information to the organism. We can see everything you see, feel everything you feel, touch everything you touch, smell everything you smell, and experience anything you experience, just by sitting in a chair linked up to the quanputer network. We haven't yet figured out how to access stored information within the brain, but we're close. Very close. But as I said, we aren't interested in controlling anyone. What we want to see is what is behind that door in your mind and experience that within ourselves, hopefully getting the hidden ability that has been described to you and humans past. That is what we are trying to do." she finishes, perfectly relaxed.
You consider this new information and wonder what other kinds of things are hidden in this facility. What kind of brave new things that are in this facility.

Soldier is spelled wrong BUT, we should request to see some of the other 'candidates'.

[authormode]Actually he is a super solider. lolool jkjk.[/authormode]
"You said I can socialize with my fellow dreamers?" you ask.
"Certainly... but first let me give you a tour of the facilities." she responds. You follow her out the door, noticing a small, highly armored "viewing center" with a doorway next to door into your room. "Just in case you actually do achieve the state." she explains. On the wall to your right is a large quanputing box, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. You walk by too quickly to examine them more closely. You should probably check them out next time you enter your room and see if you can get anything useful from them.
"Our doors will ensure you complete privacy. They open via brainscan." she tells you while putting her head between two metal rods not unlike the ones around your head when you woke. "Just like a fingerprint, a human brain is uniquely linked to the body it inhabits. Superficially, most brains operate the same: certain stimuli will produce electronic responses in the brain in the same areas as most other humans. But all humans are unique. Some have an artistic propensity, others have a analytical propensity, and others have a sort of balance between the two. The brainscanners in our doors are able to pick up on such propensities and will identify with you. You must also define a certain abstract thought, like a password, that you express in your own unique way. Oh, and you can decide who can enter your room as well. The brainscanner's database will keep your brain patterns private but you can tell it that certain people are allowed in your room. For example, I have permission to enter anyone's living quarters at any time. You can only enter yours, the bathroom outside the hall, and the entertainment area."
The door slides open and you both walk out. To the left of you is a hallway that dead-ends in an area which looks like the viewing box in your room. There is also a door marked "Bathroom" next to your room and in front of you is a room marked "Entertainment". To the right is a hallway which leads into some sort of central dining area. She takes you to the dining area, showing you a machine which also uses your brain to create food ("Just imagine the taste and it will replicate the dish!"), a door marked "Laboratory" ("Our more powerful, experimental equipment is used in there. You can only access it with myself or other lab workers."), and a trash disposal unit ("It incinerates anything you put in it and recycles the energy.") In the middle of this large room are about 5 dining tables which are white, circular and have four seats around them. There are four other people in the room, a woman and a man sitting together, laughing, eating and wearing the typical clothing of the time (man: blue, cotton jumpsuit with some polyester shorts and a white t-shirt; woman: pink, cotton jumpsuit with a one piece tunic made of some light, feathery material; neither one seems to be particularly handsome), a man dressed in similar garb to the scientist woman reading a book, and another man who has very thick goggles on and is dressed in 2000's wear (blue jeans, green shirt, sandals) and seems to be interacting with things you cannot see. You, never thinking about what you were wearing up until now, look at yourself. You are wearing a blue, cotton jumpsuit with a pair of jean shorts and a black t-shirt.
You notice that there are three other hallways, which you suppose are similar to your own. Maybe you should explore them when you get the chance.
"Well, that's pretty much everything you need to know. As I said, feel free to socialize." she says, walking off to the laboratory door.
You feel sort of hungry, and could go for a light snack. You also wonder with whom you would sit.

Get something to eat, and I guess find your own table, maybe someone at the other table will see you and invite you over. If they're nice to outsiders that is..
