Post Re: Warhammer 40,000: Imperium of Man Compilation [R8 Out!]
eh, i'm using R7's plasma cannon as it's just one giant explosion. it bounces off targets sometimes but most of the time it blows them up real good.

also i guess my point is the imperial guard need some kind of heavy weapon that's used to take down tank actors (both figuratively and literally tanks) and deal heavy damage like a rocket launcher. but even then so what if it takes a team of three and it's tripod mounted? you could probably lua your way into an actor that can turn into a turret and then turn back into an actor again on command with pie menu. sure it's just one actor operating it but they even took this liberty in the 40k rts series. the heavy weapons imp guard unit is one guy but transforms into 2-3 guys when deployed.

if you took off the blinders and took some liberties here so as to integrate 40k into cortex command more smoothly i think you could improve the mod enough so where those liberties would be worth it.

Lascannon?

the Lascannon is perfectly fine the way it is. if you want to cut it down for your own personal use. that's fine for you. but the lascannon is perfectly fine size wise.

Sir, are you using alliteration on the thread?

Anyways, I like those updated sprites a lot more! In my opinion most of the gun sprite need work

Ballistically, the R7 and R8 cannons are identical. They should have the exact same shot weight and flight behaviour, regardless of how they behave on impact. The R8 is actually even more powerful due to the submunitions - though the 3 initial emitters* it fires are fairly weak, the 12 plasma pistol-type emitters that 'fragment' out from the impact make it quite deadly.

*Long story short, each trigger pull with any plasma weapon fires three 'shots' stacked on top of each other, for visual purposes - it makes for a stronger and better-looking projectile. It's always been like this. This is why I initially miscalculated the Lascannon's firepower in comparison to the Plasma Cannon; it was always meant to be almost as strong, but I misjudged it at first since I hadn't noticed the triple-shot thing. It'll be fixed for next release though.

N. We had this discussion a few pages ago, and probably a few pages before that... long story short; I think Thunderhawks are just too big to accurately portray in Cortex Command. They'd dominate most scenes, and create a vast pile of debris when destroyed. Scaling them down or trying to adapt them wouldn't do them proper justice. Don't even get me started on the Stormraven.

Anyway, if we were to add a reusable craft for the Marines, I'd be more inclined to create an entirely new design for them. Perhaps a hybrid, with a general structure along the lines of the Valkyrie but with the aesthetics of the Aquila Lander, Arvus Lighter, and/or Thunderbolt Heavy Fighter. Something robust, yet at the same time fairly sleek and menacing, probably armed with a Heavy Bolter in the nose and maybe rocket pods.

Not gonna deny that, but again, I don't have the skills to do it all up nicely by myself.

some kind of air support would round everything out nicely.

we've got airstrikes, heavy ground weapons, but a craft that could drop off troops and be used offensively? that would be awesome.

and i guess you're right about the thunderhawk. they carry whole platoons or some ♥♥♥♥ like that. considering we'd probably only deploy around three peeps at a time maybe a craft like the one they use in killzone 2 in the intro invasion sequence? basically like an armed landing boat but from space.

Job done.

Although flying over and dropping Marines out the front may prove silly.

An IG Valkyrie is definitely planned for the future, but is not top priority - coding an armed drop craft like that has only been done once or twice before in Cortex Command*, and requires more than a little Lua scripting to work. Still, if everything goes according to plan it should be fitted with a nose-mounted heavy bolter for fire support.

Wandering back into the realm of fluff and canon for a moment, the Thunderhawk Gunship troop capacity, according to the Lexicanum, is 30 marines total (or half as many Terminators) split between the front bay and deeper crew holds, though the front bay can carry a Dread or a Marine/Attack Bike instead, reducing capacity by 5, 3 or 4 marines respectively. Given the scale of these, I think anyone should easily be able to grasp my concerns regarding size.

*See Abdul Alhazred's Air Support Mod, which I strongly recommend for all your CAS needs, if you're not too picky about factions. Be warned that the craft all take a while to get the hang of flying, though.

I'd considered the Caestus, but it is somewhat lacking in the weaponry department. Also, CC's side-on nature would make the double front ramp really hard to portray. If it faced the screen/player, then Marines would drop out the bottom or the sides, which wouldn't properly reflect the Caestus' intended deployment behaviour at all.

Oh, why didn't I see those sooner. If someone wants to resprite the arty shells, the Imperial Armour Accessories has some good bits. There's also a Bombard Ammo Crate.

you gotta be kidding me, there's a good number of armed craft around

anyways tech marines? they could function as medics in battle and be used to place turrets and other tech-y stuff.

In Cortex Command? Armed craft? Sure. Armed craft with cargo capacity? Nope.

MDC Gunships? Refitted dropships with no cargo capacity. UniTec Raptor? Pretty sure that's just a bomber. Mehman's UAVs? Tiny, no cargo capacity. akblabla's Phoenix? Basis for Abdul's gunship, no cargo capacity.

If it were easier, I'm sure it would've been done plenty of times before. Abdul's Transport is fantastic and we need more craft like it to be honest.

On the wishlist. Not good enough to sprite it myself etc. etc.

Oh it's easy allright, nobody's just taken the time to do it because they've been busy making gunships and other crafts without cargo hulls.

Abdul made one. An upscaled gunship with 2 engines and a cargo bay. Still a reasonable craft in a fight, but more suited to the dropping troops business.

I know that, because I mentioned it at least twice in my last two posts!

Would it kill you to pay more attention to the preceeding posts instead of just reading the most recent one? It's like butting into an argument based on hearing a single sentence of it and having almost no other context.

Honestly, I'd have figured you were smarter than that.
