If that doesn't work, maybe you can whois the ip of the spambots and find out what city the spambots are coming from and block that citys ips from entering the forums. That got rid of the spam bots on my forums a while back :D

^ The problem with that is, if a genuine account registers from that city the get bounced.

I think a simple fake field added to the registration and email verification should be sufficient.
