Possibility of a performance enhancing mod?
Hi all, over the past few weeks of playing CC I have realized not only is it an excellent game that reminds me of a different time of gaming, it also is still very unpolished from a performance standpoint. I don't know how much work is being put into the game currently, or if it will be finished however, it has great potential.
This question is for all you skilled modders out there, if the game never is fully finished. Would there ever be a way, to make a mod that tweaks the game so that it will fully utilize GPU/CPU power?
My main problem with the game is the slowdown I get, no matter what PC I play it on. From what I have read and experienced this leads me to believe it really does not utilize the GPU/CPU properly?
Is there a mod in the works, or does the official maker plan on addressing this?
Thanks

Re: Possibility of a performance enhancing mod?
Okay, there's a few things that need clarifying first here. First, Cortex command does not access the GPU. At all. Ever. All sprites are handled by the CPU, and nothing else. Second, as modders we cannot alter the base code in this way. We can only add new content to the game. Third, the entire system would have to be reworked in order to utilise all CPU. I don't expect Data to do that any time soon, simply due tot he time and effort it would take to convert to multiple cores. Fourth, if you are having a great deal of slowdown, you might want to check this thread. It contains advice on how to get the best performance out of CC, and what each individual setting does. Hope I answered everything.

Re: Possibility of a performance enhancing mod?
Technically, you could make the game run better by removing some excess particles from various sources, but that won't improve the engine, it'll just reduce the amount of stuff it has to calculate. Sort of a CC Lite. Mods are still going to lag just as much though.
Otherwise, Roast pretty much nailed it. Unless CC goes open source all of a sudden (which i wouldn't count on), modders can do diddly squat about the optimization.

Understood, thank you guys for clearing that up for me. Lag won't keep my from playing it, but It can be a bit annoying at times. However, I am impressed with the work they put in so far.

Now that you mention it... something can be done, something has been done , should take a couple of days to clean it up and update for B26. Also from twitter: Quote: 26 Oct CVESource: added OpenGL rendering pipeline, using OpenGL 1.1 standard This will help a lot if done properly.

Isn't that for the CVE, not CC?

Darn, even one extra Core working would most likely remove most if not all slowdown. If only I knew more about programming

AS FAR AS I KNOW The most modders could do is take a lot of the projectiles, gibs, particles and glows away from the units.
This is a very bad solution, and will both make the game look bad, and the explosions will be weak, on top of things not exploding into a thousand pieces.
Your choice no lag, or much less fun.
