Post subject:  Limited drop area?

Hey guys, I'm one of the HIB kids and so far I'm really loving the game. I'd love it more if I could drop reinforcements anywhere on the map, as right now it's limited to somewhere around the left side of the map? Trying to replenish my Wehrmacht Flak 88s on the top of my bunker is not possible right now as they do not come with wheels :P

One thing that I've found that I really love doing is mining enough gold to fill a crate with blue bombs, and then turning that thing into an orbital flak bomb. Doesn't really make itself useful when you can only bomb the one area that the enemy aren't coming from! That brings another thing to mind, where can I modify the amount of time it takes for a drop to arrive?

Cheers!

I believe drop areas are set within the map itself, so to change those you'd have to edit the map's data file. As for how long it takes a drop to arrive, I believe that is hardcoded into the engine, so you're somewhat out of luck.

Ah, that drop time info is a shame, but I suppose it can't be helped currently. I'll look into the map files and see if I have much luck with the drop bounds though!

Thank you for the helpful reply!

The ETA hardcoded bit is for some realism. Don't forget they have to come all the way from Midas first.

That's something that confused me a bit as well.
Why is it that the drop areas are flawed as they are?

I mean, obviously by how the areas are designated.
But why is that designation even there / left over? Was it not spotted before release? Or was it being a bugger of a problem?

It's some badly implemented realism. The drop area should show during the building phase, or be based on the brain unit(s). We should know where the drop area is limited to so we could build appropriately, but no indication is given. It's a nice idea, but at the moment it is at best a badly implemented surprise.

Once Data gets his bunker building areas working, I guess the landing zones will make more sense.

The alternative, in the meanwhile, would be to have landing zones covering all of the map.

The limited drop area really is weird and I don't much reason behind it.

Really it's just so you can't drop a crab bomb on your enemies' brains. You have to fly something over there and kill 'em yourselves.

Time delay for realism, but you forget that if you're dropping something from orbit you have ~half of the planet visible to drop your package into, rather than 10 metres :P

I managed to work around the drop zone in the map file, like Duh said. Set the X-origin of the dropzone to 0, and the width to the width of the map's bitmap in pixels. Unlimited dropzone.

I've attached Grass Plains 1.ini as an example, look in the Team 1 LZ block (ends with "Name = LZ Team 1")

Cheers again!

Post subject:  Re: Limited drop area?

I keep a rule of thumb; when anybody helps me out, I help them in return. I've applied the dropzone removal to all the standard maps. I understand that this is an easy change, but I'd like to share it as an indication of my gratitude :P

See attached.
It's an overwrite of Base.rte which I know is bad, when I tried using a seperate mod folder to store the 'updated' maps it didn't work. I'll need to try messing with the Index.ini some more. If I get that working then I'll be sure to present it here.

Thanks again!
